My 2-cents for FREE!

I was on the fence with this game, like all games. Even more so with this one though. It just looked too simple. Then a friend of mine bought it and he began emailing me, telling me of all his moves. He told me of the AI, interface, fleets, research, diplomacy, manual, and the maps and counters. Some good, some not as good.

I kept going back to the screenshots posted here and the few posted at the developers site. I must have done this a dozen times, just gawking at the pictures.

Then I read about the things gamers did not like and it reminded me of riding along the fence line with Guns Of August. I did the same thing with that game. I even had a friend that bought it first and emailed me of his encounters. I remember the developer being so fast with replies, as well as patches. That was a good thing.

Well I ended up buying GoA and after the last patch, it is one of my favorite little games. I can play it between chores for an hour here and there and have a blast! And I still do, a lot. I can't describe it other than it is just plain fun. Not too hard and not too simple, just right for me and it is the type of game that fits a certain niche.

I had convinced myself that I would not buy WW2RtV until after the first patch, if I bought it at all. Then I went to the forum thread done by dave74 and read his AAR. I got about half way done when I had decided that I really wanted to see for myself how this game was.

Years ago, shortly after the era of Total Annihilation and Diablo2, I lost my desire to play games in the evenings. My friends still play until the wee hours of the morning, and some of them are in their 50's. Not me, until now. Right after I bought WW2RtV on 8-02-08, something weird happened. I got hooked. This game is a blast and an addiction. It is simple but yet complex enough to keep me always guessing. I don't care about how perfect it fits history or not, it is in the era of WW2. I can change history, or I can follow along the same historical path as I know it to be. I have been playing again until I go to bed and I have been looking forward to the next evening when I wake up. It's that fun.

The patch is expected to be released tomorrow (8-7-08) and now my saved campaign won't work any longer after the patch. Oh well, guess I will have to start it all over again. Oh boy! [:D]

Hey Larry,

I've read a lot of your posts, so I got the game as well. I'm playing around with the Poland scenario. It's interesting but sure could use some work - graphics for sure.  I would LOVE to have a normal pointer for my mouse instead of that big, dopey triangle!

I'll keep experimenting with it and see how it goes!

Well, that's easy enough. If you go into the GFX folder, you find a BMP that contains 64 sequential versions of the big, dopey triangle. You can edit it at will (and the fruits of your labor will display properly if you preserve the background color).

Personally, I wish everything that needs to be changed about this game was as easy as that...

Past...u call that easy??? Editing 64 bitmaps? And making them look like a normal mouse cursor??? Why are there 64 versions anyway? Most games have a few mouse cursors at most.

This is because the default cursor is animated and these 64 pictures are subsewquent animation frames. Animatoin does not change the shape of the cursor, but if you look carefully you'll see the light reflection effect ;)

It's very easy to change this to a classic pointer. Just draw it once and paste it 64 times in proper places. It doesn't have to be animated.

Dood - you can have a lot of fun with this! The possibilities are almost endless. Personally, I like it. And, if I wind up with a half hour when I don't have anything better to do, I might doodle me a new cursor.

Hey AZ! The posts about the graphics are part of what kept me on the fence with this game. However, as long as the plains, hills, and forests are clearly visible then it is good enough for me. I love great graphics and I have an expensive graphics card, but as long as the counters are not grainy as in Battlefront, I can manage fine.

What bothers me more than the lack of crisp graphics are the lack of city names. However, that is promised to be fixed in the first patch. I also got used to just clicking on hexes to get the information on the right side of the screen and that works for me.

The fun factor of this game is what captured me. I have had hundreds of games and only two of them did I ever get immersed in, this being the third. That says a lot. It's just fun! [:D]

Thanks for the game! Very few games have ever immersed me and this one is the third out of hundreds. And I'm picky too. [X(]

MUCH better on the city names!  I hope you can also get the country borders be to darker and thicker too. That would help.

I'm getting off topic here but what the heck? How about this - is there an easy way to tell which units are being influenced by a particular leader, without clicking on them?  I'd like to be able to see at a glance who's assigned to Rommel, or Patton, etc.

Welcome aboard Judge. I think that with enough people playing this and suggesting changes, this game just might become a real classic. It'll take a while, but let's hope it makes it!
