Unfortunately, this command cannot be used for groups:

Group cannot lay string of sonobuoys

Group cannot lay string of sonobuoys with ";" hotkey.

I haven't really done much of ASW ops so far, but wouldn't this command make the most sense for individual helos? Say you have one of those funky thin triangular contact zones...have a helo run straight along that to a point, dropping sonobuoys along the way to try to track down the contact?

I believe that is the most common usage for the function and that most Maritime Patrol Aircraft [MPA] operate individually. However, there are some nations that operate their MPA in pairs. According Milan Vego's book, Soviet Naval Tactics, the USSR did commonly deploy pairs of MPA on patrol.

That said, individual MPA have no problem deploying strings of sonobuoys. This bug only affects groups. Players can simply break up any groups they might have in order get around this problem.
