Recon missions

Are recon missions useful? I've not found them to be so, but wonder if I'm not using them properly. Anyone have any suggestions?
My personal experience has not been all that usefule with this type of mission, either. I find that they tend to continue closing on targets until they get shot down. The fact that they try to execute their mission at the highest speed possible gives them a small chance of survival, but still not very good, IMO.
They do seem to be a bit more inquisitive than other types of missions, but sometimes get distracted by chasing the wrong targets.
One annoying characteristic of the mission / game is that even though a contact has been fully indentified and classified, it is quickly forgotten and the process starts over once the detecting unit moves out of range.
Then, again, I might just be using the mission incorrectly, too. [:)]
