Can Naval Unit Graphics be given an upgrade path?

I was just wondering...

In the same way as Armour and Aircraft unit graphics change as new technology is researched, is it possible to Mod the game to do the same for Naval Units?

For example, I've noticed in the Unit graphics directory that there is only 1 Submarine icon per Faction. Is it possible to create 3 or 4 new icons to visually show the development of Submarines/Uboats or is the game "Hard-coded" to one icon only for Naval units?

Yes, I'm pretty sure the graphics are there, just repeats of each other so replacing them is possible.

I'll have to check again but I'm sure there's only 1 image file for Subs etc. whereas Armour has about 4 different files.

If I create a new file numbered 1,2,3 etc at the end for each upgrade like the other's classes, would the game recognise it?

No, unit types number of images is coded so cannot be changed. But, for our sequel Commander Napoleon at War, we have "num_images" in the unit.txt script so there ppl would be able to add more unit images and changing the script to use them :)

That's a shame, any chance that this will change in a future patch?
