Historically most armies stayed in camp over December/January...but then again, Fredricksburg and Stones River was fought in December...so I guess it just depended.

The armies preferred to march in mid Spring up until late autumn, as that was the best weather.

I just wondered as there was a scene in "Gods&Generals" where 2 soldiers swapped tobacco and coffee on a river in winter.I admit to knowing little about the ACW,now the Crimean War,thats a different matter.Did you know that there were Australians that fought in the Crimea?

Generally speaking....both sides usually went into winter quarters...but....skirmishes did occasionally happen, especailly in the Western Theatre....Cavalry raids and what not.

Australians in the Crimea? I didn't...of course, they'd have been members of their colonies, since Australia didn't exist then.
