Modena, problem or no?

I want to verify this is a game bug before I post it to Mantis. I am Austria. I allied Modena in Feb 1805 via minor diplomacy. Turkey DOWs Austria in June 1805. Modena becomes a Freestate. OK. Checking the log, I see Turkey requested alliance with France in June, but France denied the request. France is not at war with Austria. However, France and Turkey are at now war with Modena and France has moved in to assault the city of Modena?

I had a similar experience in a previous game. This time I garrisoned Modena and even moved in a cav corps to make clear that I own the place. Maybe I'm missing something, but if I own a Freestate then France cannot march in and take it without DOWing me, yes? If they can, I'd like to understand why. Assuming they cannot, I have the game files which I can post with a bug report.

If France DOW'ed Modena in the same month that Turkey DOW'ed Austria, then I think France can still legitimately move in. Otherwise, it's a bug; but I haven't seen that one before, so I'd check the log for a France-Modena DOW first.

I went back and verified that France did DOW Modena in June, prior to Turkey DOWing Austria.  So technically Modena was not yet a Freestate.  I may be answering my own question here.  Since it was not yet a Freestate, even though it was Allied to me, Modena was still up for grabs, yes?  That would explain it.  I'm just getting back into EiA after a month or so away so I'm relearning a few things.

It's not up for grabs. Because you had "ally" with it, that means you had at least influence at the time the control of it was rolled. So, you will ALWAYS get it. It's just a matter of who can take it away.
