AOs are also somewhat dynamic, have conditions and can change based on events. For example, as the battle opens, the Russian southern pincer has two tank corps. But for the first five turns, these are held in reserve with very limited AOs. Once the Soviet player advances far enough to take two key hexes, the AO changes and the tanks are effectively released
A question about this...are these two tank corps ALWAYS locked until turn five? And are they only unlocked when the Soviet player takes two key hexes? And are the Key hexes the same every time?
I'm trying to work out if the German player knows what's coming and is therefore able to deal with it?
Is this where the mystery variants come in?

No.
Yes in the historical AO's.
Yes.
Yes, if the German player is willing to take the losses that would result in trying to holding onto these clear hexes.
Yes.
Moreover, if there is little combat residue from attacking the German strongpoints, the Soviet player can seize control of the hexes on turn one.

Each Tank Corps has its own release hex. Yes, the German player will know about them, assuming he has played the game as the Soviet player, and this is exactly where the Mystery Variants come in. The German player could decide to try and defend those hexes, (at the certain sacrifice of the defenders), simply because they are the TC release hexes rather than from broader military reasons.
He is much less likely to do so if a Mystery Variant could release one or both Tank Corps early, thus rendering the sacrifice useless.
