Question. What do the vertical bar charts on opposite sides of the horizontal progress chart during combat signify? And what do the numbers mean above the bar charts mean??

percent of commitment of available forces.  if the bar is full, all forces are committed. better generals, dependent on terrain, can commit more troops.  the numbers indicate the force for calculating retreat, higher number = better

Thanks. This is not a simplistic game. The graphics and scale would belie that.

Er, no, that's not quite right.

The bars on the left and right are your unadjusted raw combat strengths for each side. The bar in the center reflects the "tug of war" and shows which side is winning at any given time and by how much. Read the Combat section in the manual for info on unadjusted and adjusted combat strength for units.

- Erik

Could someone please clarify the Vertical Bar information.

edit: Hey Erik, I guess our posts crossed in the posting! [:D]

But I still have a couple questions.

The manual says no modifier can exceed +/- 6.

But in the list of modifiers there is -99 firing unit is an Artillery unit firing at range 2 against an unspotted unit.

Also, the numerical value in the Vertical Bars, is the maximum 200?

Are the combat values of each unit added together to arrive at a total unmodified combat strength?

Thanks!

BTW, good question JimKehn. [:D]

Thanks Erik. Nice game, but damn it is frustrating learning this.  I am playing SP as the Rebs. I guess attacking DC in December '61 is not advised???
