Another Long Campaign Question

In regards to a WWII Long campaign, I possibly have a stupid question regarding timeline advancement in the campaign. For instance, say you begin the campaign in 1941 in Africa. can you advance through the campaign and participate in the invasion of Sicily, then Italy and ultimately Normandy? Is the advancement to various fronts random, or will your unit advance to the various places in Europe?

Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question.

For the most part, yes - you advance along a timeline that sends you to different locations. It will sometimes even allow you to chose (say, Pacific or Western Front, for example). Depends on the nation too.
