Played a game on an outdoor grass field, in the rain. At the end of the game, only a couple of players on each team had dirty unis; the rest looked like they'd just stepped out of the locker room.

This is not a huge deal; I was just wondering if it's a shortcoming in the game or have I missed something?

I am pretty sure at one point in the past, all players eventually got funky. But I think David may have been working on it for some reason and it is how it is now. No idea as to what or why, but I do remember this discussion from the past.

I think if a ballcarrier gets tackled 4 times he gets dirty.

As I recall, only players involved in tackles get dirty.  This had something to do with how the graphics engine being used took longer to redraw players than David would have liked.
 
I did ask for this to be scaled back a bit, because backs looked like the swamp thing while linemen were clean.  That didn't look right.
 
This is an area that I suspect would have been looked at again for 3.0.
