Invasions

Well, I've gotten fairly comfortable with port to port strategic movement, but I cant seem to get my hands around the invasion procedure. I can buy the amphib points, have the invading unit at or adjacent to an actual port, activate the unit, press the amphib button and the unit dissapears into the fleet box where it can be found aboard its own private LST. But I cant seem to get any further! Can somebody give me a hand?
Thanks a lot!

Once they are loaded you must move them into a sea zone. Then on the next turn they can invade.
Be careful as the Allies. I had a problem when I loaded a UK unit and a US unit in the same port on the same turn. The US unit ended up in a UK fleet and I couldn't unload it.

This is the area I am having trouble with. When I push the amphibious transport button, the unit moves into the port area. I can move the transport to the adjacent Sea Zone, and then I'm stuck. After that I cant seem to get the unit to do anything. The unload button will not highlight and the only thing that I can get to highlight is the move button which requires movement to another port or to another sea zone. Specificaly, I have a motorized division in Kiel. I purchase 2 AIPs, activate the division and push the amphibious transport button. The unit leaves the map and is found in a LST in Kiel. I select that unit and push move and select the North Sea Zone. The transport appears in that zone. I want to invade Norway, but the only button i can get to activate (on the next turn) is the move button which will only accept an order to move to Oslo. I cannot get the unit to unload anywhere on the Norweigan coast. It will noit move to Oslo because Oslo is occupied by an enemy unit.
What am I doing wrong?

If you click on the hex you wish to invade, you will see two icons in the hex info area on the right - one for bombing and one for invading - if you have an eligible unit the invasion icon will be clickable.

I actually experienced a similar issue when trying to ship the Afrika Korps to North Africa. If memory serves, I was able to unload the unit on the ITALIAN turn. I found this out by accidentally clicking on the wrong transport when trying to unload an Italian unit. Try this, and see if maybe this will permit a combined invasion by multiple powers.

As mickrocks said, you do need to click the target hex.

Another issue is that some sea zone boundaries appear odd (e.g., the Norway thread on the main WW2RtV board talks about Copenhagen being a hex on the North Sea rather than the Baltic). You need to be sure your assault transport is in the right sea zone.

As a practical matter, I strongly advise against invasions in sea zones where you lack significant naval superiority. Others have had valid concern about the way the system has ALL defending fleets in the sea zone teleport to the landing site even before the transports hit the beach! You have to endure a naval combat as soon as you declare an invasion. This is not at all accurate for a large ocean like the North Atlantic, and I even have my doubts about it for confined seas such as the Baltic or North Sea. Even when the Allies had deciphered Axis orders (e.g., the battles of Cape Matapan [not an invasion, but still a valid comparison, I think] and Midway), the naval commanders needed multiple days to prepare and issue the defensive orders. Granted, at one point, the USN and RAN did intercept an IJN invasion convoy bound for Milne Bay, but even then, they only stopped part of it.

I would say that each unit at sea should have a % chance of making the interception, rather than all (apparently) automatically making it. This would add a realistic consideration of naval superiority, without making invasion almost impossible against a fleet at sea.

IIRC I could never click on the unit because it showed up as an American ship. I'll try it again just to see.

IIRC, the Afrika Korps showed up as a German ship, but since the fleet was Italian, I was actually able to click on it during the Italian turn. I have to admit it's been a few weeks, so my memory may be imperfect.
