Scuttle the enemy's ships to pad your score?

Just witnessed something really odd.
I just finished playing the Coral Sea scenario against the Japanese AI. Got lucky in the carrier duel and heavily damaged both Shokaku and Zuikaku. Both promptly left the battle and were inbound for Truk when the scenario ended.
The end game screen allows me to view the Japanese side first. Wanting to see how badly I mauled the two carriers I clicked on the two seperate TFs. Zuikaku had 74 system and 52 flot damage, but otherwise limping slowly towards Truk. Shokaku, on the other hand, had 91 flot damage and almost dead in the water. She would have surely gone down had the game lasted another turn, but as far as the game (and score) was concerned she was still afloat. Then I noticed the scuttle option was available. Curious, I accepted it and sure enough she goes down. I then checked the intelligence screen and was surprised to see my score was increased by the value of Shokaku plus her remaining air wing.
Is this right? In this game it didn't really matter as I had already won handily, and it was against the AI anyway, but could this be abused by either side in a pbem?
