Usage of AS / AD ships to assist Ship Repair

I have a question which I do not get answered on the classical ship repair threads.

Port size is a factor in inherent ship repair.
Max. Port size is normally 10

Naval HQ "increase" port size for ship repair purposes
AS ships als assist in sub repair if I am well informed (by "virually" increasing port size).

My question is if these Naval HQ and AS ships are of any additional use when you already have a port size of 10? Or can you then better use these naval HQ and AS ships in other places with smaller ports?

Kind regards,
Christophe

cverbrug-Have you thought about ARs? It's my understanding you can have up to 4 AR in a port to help with repairs. More than 4 does not further help repair work.

In my Stateside ports I keep at least 1 AR, AD & AS each.

I know about AR / AD's...., I used AS (whp help repair subs) just as an example.

My principle question is if one can get any more benefit of these ships if your port size is by itself already a size 10 port....

I dont know if ARs expand 10 size port to 14 size. But without question each AR provide 1 repair point for random damaged ship a day for sure. Port has separate rolls and I think they are for each ship separately. So without ARs you can have 5 ships repaired by 1 damage point, with ARs you may end up with 9ships repaired by 1 point (or less ships with more points).

I've not seen any appreciable difference in port repairs when I put any of the repair ship types in a Size 10 port.  Now, if a port has shipyard repair, adding a repair ship or tender does help improve how many ships get some repair, but it's not a lot of help and IMO putting the repair/tenders in medium sized ports helps more.  I put mine in ports like Vancouver, Melbourne and forward bases like the Admiralties, Ulithi, etc, and I DO notice an increase in repairs when I do this.

As far as I know: yes. You can raise effective size of any port by (no more then) 4 using either 1 naval HQ or 4 ARs or 2ADs/ASs (last limited to DDs/Subs repairs only of course).

However it is likely to be less noticeable to put 4 ARs in Tokyo then in say Palau (port=4) just because in Palau you double effective size whereas in Tokyo raise is less then 50%.

I am confused a bit on this point also. I build up wake to a large port size 3 or so and besides the AR ships don you have to have a large number of fuel and supplies to affect ship repair in smaller ports . In my last game I had 40K supplies and 60K fuel at wake plus Central Pacific HQ and repair was slow so I must be missing some part of the process.

Port repairs are not automatic; there's a random number that has to be met, which is where the AR/AS/AD ships help.  They raise the port size for that random number, and allow more chances for the random number to take effect.  That's why I put my repair ships in medium sized ports; a Size 6 port that has an AR in it functions as a Size 8 port plus some additional bonuses for repair purposes.  I'm not so sure that a Size 8 port with an AR works as a Size 12 (but more ships per turn will be worked on with the AR there).

Remember that to effect repairs on most ships the port size needs to be 5 or greater, although I have seen where smaller ships like PTs repair at ports less than size 5.

1. As far as I know, 4 ARs in a port size 10 does help.
2. A port size 3 with 4 ARs will help. But a remember a size three port is unlikely to have
repair points. And those help.

Also small escorts/destroyers/subs seem to repair decently at smaller ports....But CAs and BBs should go back to
big bases...Even PH is not that good at repairing BBs.

People are starting to mix two kinds of repair together; the inherent port repair and shipyard repair.

Port repair is available at any medium/large port, and is a function of the size of the port itself.  An AR or other support type ship raises the port size by a certain value, which increases the chance for the port to repair damage to each ship docked or inactive at the port.  An AR can assist 4 ships each with this improvement; other support ships can assist 2.

Shipyard repair is the specialized repair facilities that build up repair points.  There's only a few of these on each side, and typically in Size 10 ports.   An AR in these ports does not help them repair ships, or if they do it's such a small increase you'd be better off putting them in a non-shipyard port.  I've found that AR's in large ports without shipyards have a noticeable effect on repairs, but I can't see any difference when they're in shipyard repair ports.  For example, I can dock a TF of 10 damaged subs in Vancouver with an AS and an AR disbanded there too, and within a week every sub will have repaired up to 20 SYS damage each.  If they're docked there without the support ships it can take a month to get that much SYS damage repaired.
