As Miller took over after a month: NO MILLERS in this thread, no reading, no posting!





As there is no sign of AE to come within the next months, I´ve decided to take on another opponent. Bigbaba is the Allied commander, I´m going once again as the Japanese. This is a Nikmod 9.2 grand campaign.

This was agreed on hrs and game settings:

Game settings:

1 day turns
historical first turn off
allied damage control on
advanced weather effects on
reinforcements variable +-15days
PDU on
sub doctrine off for both sides
sub auto ops off

only one port attack on turn one, no overabuse of the turn one movement bonus (means no landings on turn 7 in Australia or something like that)

max. aircraft on airfield max. 50*airfield size (+about 10%) eg size 4 = max around 220 planes (around means perhaps 223 but not 238!! )

max. aircraft in sea hex = "around 450" (= 5 Essex carriers or the equivalent size 9 airfield). Can be adjusted to around 550 also if you like.

Japanese are not allowed to do strategic bombing in China! Far too easy to destroy all the ressources, HI and OIL. Japanese may bomb everything else of Allied territory.

Allied are not allowed to do strategic bombing of JAPANESE OCCUPIED ALLIED territory. This should prevent the Allied player to do suicide attacks e.g. with carriers to destroy some oil facilities (which I´ve seen enough) and for the reasons mentioned under above point. Allied may bomb everything in Japan, Korea, eastern China, Thailand = everything Japan held at 1941/12/7. If you want to starve Japan, take the bases or sink the ships!

B29 aren´t allowed on naval attack

B29 only on level 6 or 7+ airfields, this should limit them to places that were big enough in real life.

4Es on nav attack min alt 10.000 ft

ASW TF max 6 ships

PT boats max 6 at a base (1x6 PT TF or 2x3 PT TF. Not 6 TFs with single PTs!)

no sub invasions

no mini para drops. As many para drops allowed as wished but they should involve at least 300-1000 men at min.

cutting off units only with "real" combat units, not some 10 assault point base forces

no use of dozens of small barge, MSW, ... TFs to guard ports (engine can´t handle dozens of small TFs in one hex)

no exploit of dozens invasion TFs going at one base, means: if you need 300 ships for an invasion, put them into 5, 6 or 7 TFs but not in 60 TFs with 5 ships each.

most hrs are easily to follow and won´t come up anyway, most important will probably be the ac stacking limits. If you would like any other hrs included also, I´m fine with that. My experience is the more hrs, the better.

If you find those hrs biased to one side, I´m happy to play both the Japanese or the Allied.

First turn is done, took me only some 3 hours, so I´m pretty sure that many things came short in planning, this will most certainly lead to many problems in the coming weeks/months.

about 35-40% of the attacking bombers carried torps, a good ratio. I´m not sure if a torp is more severe for a sub than a 800 kg bomb, but flak losses are really light so it doesn´t really matter if the bombers attack at 200ft or 6000ft. 12 subs are confirmed sunk after this turn. I can only hope that bigbaba doesn´t come up with the idea to set sails with all his damaged ships next turn as I will attack again. Bringing out everything next turn would be the best decision for him because even if a lot of the damaged ships would sink, if they stay in port they will ALL be sunk. At least I would send out all my damaged subs.

losses within the attackers are light, the airbases on Hawai are completeyl destroyed. Now the question is, what will the USN do? Will they run next turn (I guess so)? But where will they head to? There are only three directions which are East, North or South. I would go South at flank speed. I´m not willing to split KB so nevertheless that I think best would be to flee South, I will place my carriers 4 hexes East of Pearl with the orders nav attack/port attack. The chances are 3:1 in bigbabas favour that he moves the right direction, if he decides to run.

Damn! [:(] One of my subs sitting in the retreat route to the South from Hawai is attacked by DD escorts. Glen sightings later on reveal that the enemy warships are fleeing South from Pearl. As mentioned earlier, KB is sitting four hexes East of Pearl, no sense sending them full speed after the fleeing ships. At the end of the day, two enemy TFs are spotted 6 hexes South of Pearl. The TFs are identified as : CACACACACACACDDDD. With six hexes of movement this could come close to the max movement of the old and slow BBs from Pearl. Perhaps this is just a feint though and the BBs are still sitting in Pearl, there´s still a dark anchor symbol, so still a lot of ships there.

Most bombers were bombing but those 800kg bombs are killers. Another six SS are confirmed sunk today, bringing the total of SS sunk at Manila to 18. IIRC there are 22 subs at Manila on 7 Dec so only 4 should be left, all four heavily damaged and perhaps a couple are already sunk but not confirmed due to FOW. After this day it is obvious that the attack on Manila was a full success with the submarine force totally destroyed. This should give me at least one and a half years until the Allied will be ready to mount a real sub offensive into the SRA. So when the Allied SS force has grown to remarkable numbers again, this will be the time when my better ASW PC are coming in numbers from the shipyards.

The ships and the port is left burning heavily...

you get most times more than 6 PTs, that´s correct. So the solution is to either disband them in port or pull out the others to another base.

If you are the Allied player you don´t need to have the mod because all the "mod data" will come with the save file from the Japanese player. The Japanese player has to install the mod.

Have unloaded our major invasion force for Malaya at the port 1 at Songkhia. One enemy sub has been sitting in port and one in the hex East to it since yesterday. The enemy troops in Malaya are all running towards Singapore, it seems I will get all of Malaya without a fight and the enemy is intending to hold only Singers. I had planned to land another two divs somewhere further South but this doesn´t seem to be necessary if the Allied forces abandon all bases. Singapore will become a big prison camp, I will starve them to death. Without having to do an invasion at an enemy base and without fighting the way South, my divs will be in good shape for other tasks.

I-155 tangles around with the escorts after hitting a Brit destroyer. Before being driven off by the escorts, I-155´s captain identifies BC Repulse being in this TF so probably we´re speaking of Force Z here. This is NW of Singapore and with 90+ long range torp bombers in range and set to nav attack, Force Z should now already be destroyed as this TF was spotted by search planes also (without spotting the BBs though). None of my bombers from Borneo or Indochina launched though. Have moved in 54 long range torp bombers more and tomorrow we will have more than 140 Betties/Nells at three different bases set to nav attack 15 hexes at 10.000ft. No matter if the enemy goes North or South it will always stay in range of at least 90 bombers. We have also some 70 aircraft (recons, patrols and bombers) searching for Force Z. My bomber bases are well supplied, not overstacked and two of them are within range of air HQs, so tomorrow should be interesting...

Those APDs are the best ASW weapons the IJN can field for the next 18 months. First time this ASW TF runs over a sub and the second class sub is finished off by APD-36, sinking the bastard with two real hits and 5 near misses. After this day we have 25 subs confirmed sunk and I hope to see another two sinking at Pearl. I doubt that the Allied have more than 15 operational subs at the moment.

As you can see, POW isn´t part of this TF anymore and nearly all torp bombers concentrate on the fast battlecruiser. The first torp hit wasn´t severe and many torps missed but after the second hit, Repulse was a sitting duck and easily finished off by the rest of the attackers. The battlecruiser is reported sunk and shows up in the sunken ship list as the first major Allied loss of the war.

RENOWN-Class battlecruiser ordered in January 1915 and intended to be built by Palmer's but was transferred to John Brown of Clydebank as a longer Slipway was required,. The ship was laid down on 25th January 1915 on the same day as her sister ship RENOWN. Launched on 8 January 1916 she was the 10th RN ship to carry the name introduced for a 50 gun ship in 1595 and last been used in 1892 for a battleship 1916 sold in 1911. Flak isn´t a real killer yet, but it´s very intense already. If you look at my Pearl Harbour Strikes after the 7 Dec you will see that 40-50% of the bombers coming in low are damaged. In half a year when the enemy gets the first ships to upgrade the AA suit then a major TF will have some decent AA defense. Not to talk about a base where a couple of US baseforces are.

even though only 3 are shot down immediately, another 4 were lost on the way home and nearly 50% were damaged. The Kates weren´t hit as hard because they were bombing from 15.000ft. Would I have had ordered them to bomb from 6000ft then some 60 would have been damaged.

With Ops losses, that's a bit higher indeed. And it's also true all the battlewagons had already left, so this reduces the flak too.  I'll watch your AAR carefully for some time then.

One CVL (Ryuho with 48 ac) is sitting in Truk, waiting to get the Zeroes upgraded and another (smaller one with 30 ac) is sitting with CVE Hosho in Osaka, also waiting for the Zeroes to upgrade. I´m not that a fan of using a carrier TF with some 70 ac and with Force Z destroyed now, there is no need anyway. I usually don´t use the baby carriers in the SRA because with Jolo and Kuching you have Betties ruling the whole SRA anyway. With most of the ships in Manila destroyed, it makes it even less important to have one or two CVLs South of the Philipines.

With the stacking limit for sea based hexes I can never use all of my carriers in a hex anyway and won´t have enough carriers to have two "KBs". So I will use two CVLs to replace one of my fleet carriers when the fleet carrier is in need of repairs/upgrades/pilot training. So if nothing real bad will happen I should be able to have a 450 ac KB ready for a fight all the time. I´m not a fan of splitting KB anyway so I will keep the 450 ac TF together.

Biggest problem at the moment is the lack of aircraft. Pools for Zeroes and Oscars are empty and production is low. Will take some time to get my factories running and even longer to upgrade all those Claudes and Nates. At the moment I don´t seem to need my fighters anyway, as bigbaba is doing a Sir Robin like I´ve never seen it before. Serves me well, I always thought a Sir Robin defense isn´t good anyway, but there are different oppinions out there. I will advance as long as I won´t be stopped somewhere. And if I never have to fight seriously, then it will be hard to really stop me before mid 43.

HMS Prince of Wales (Battleship, 1941-1941)
HMS Prince of Wales, a 35,000-ton King George V class battleship built Birkenhead, England, was completed in March 1941. In late May, while still not fully operational, she was sent into action with the German battleship Bismarck and received significant damage from heavy gunfire. Following repairs, Prince of Wales carried Prime Minister Winston Churchill across the Atlantic to Newfoundland. There, on 9-12 August, Churchill joined U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt for the Atlantic Charter conference, the first meeting between the two English-speaking leaders of what was emerging as the "Grand Alliance" against the Axis powers.

Following her return to British waters, Prince of Wales went to the Mediterranean, where she successfully engaged Italian planes off Malta in late September. Sent to the Far East with the battlecruiser HMS Repulse to counter the swiftly developing Japanese threat in the region, she arrived on 2 December 1941. On 8 December, the day of the Pearl Harbor Raid on the other side of the International Date Line, the Japanese landed in northern Malaya. Prince of Wales, Repulse and four destroyers were sent to attack the invasion force. After finding no targets, the British ships were returning to Singapore when, late in the morning of 10 December, they were attacked by a strong force of Japanese high-level bombers and torpedo planes. Congrats for the PoW.  Although 22,38, that's not far in the north of Songkhia.  He should have fled south or west full flank, instead of plain north at cruise speed...

yup, that´s what I´ve asked bigbaba too. I guess he went South the second and third turn but then decided to turn around and go North. [&:] He told me that he was surprised that I already had my bombers so near to the front (they are stationed in Indochina, Malaya and Borneo) so early so this has to be seen as a beginners fault.

I don´t know if he has no PBEM experience at all, but this definetely was a beginners fault. Even the AI has torp bombers in Indochina on turn one...

That's part of the reasons I've started following your AAR : checking the beginner's (at WitP PBEM) errors to avoid.[:D]
 
However, his BBs escaped unscathed from PH.  He did not panick and sent them right through the cloud of subs that litter the area south of PH, instead of an east or north route (where you were more susceptible of lying in ambush).  He deprived you of some 1500-1600 VPs that way.[;)]
