Other posters have mentioned changing sides during a game, as in some turns playing the Axis, others the Allies. I can't figure out how to do that. can someone advise?

Press F1 and then a cheat window will open.
You can set there is the country human or AI

I think you will find this is one of the great ways to address the AI issues.  I generally save a game at various critical points and then come back to these waypoints and switch sides.  I have already seen how the Axis can win in Russia, now I come back and defend against the effective Axis setup I created a bit ago.  Force the Germans to do the move they seem to miss, avoid the pileup in Jugoslavia, play the naval game in the North Atlantic.  Watch out though, you must commit the Axis to the attack, or they will abandon your whole scheme and go off to take the Netherlands.  In any case I have had great fun with this technique.

I also use the F1 window to transfer PP from Germany to Italy, and vice versa. The overland "convoy" is something I think the game should support, so I "just do it".

Thx for the F1 cheat, Doom.

After launching the '40 attack through the Ardennes, and against Belgium and Holland, I switched sides.  Got whipped pretty handily, of course, but it was more fun than letting the French AI wet its pants.

And that PP transfer idea is kewl, CP.
