Ive had a couple messages saying that a couple of my opponents have discovered planet killing artifacts...

Should I be worried?

Oh yeah you should.

The planet killer artifact is the only artifact that can be deactivated before a game in the option menu, and for a reason.

A single ship equiped with it can destroy an entire planet in a single second. Unless you have the invincible shields equiped.
