What does that orange pentagon outline mean? I see Fort 3 for hexes with and without it on the lower terrain expanation bar.

That's a permanent fortification not to be confused with normal entrenchment although both can occur in the same hex with the higher level taking precedence.
You have 0 % chance of taking an enemy occupied hex with permanent fortification (cavalry defence excepted). Normal artillery fire is utter useless against permanent fortification.
You need siege artillery to reduce levels of permanent fortifications which can never be reproduced in the game. You have 1/3 chance of eliminating all remaining fortification levels per shot and air support is useless. You will always reduce one level of fortification per shot (not accumulative). Siege artillery is utter useless against other targets than permanent fortifications.

What about those cities without the fortress indicator that have fort strength? As far as I can tell, they act the same as a fortress (with symbol). Just missed when the alt map was created?

You mean like Stuttgart that is a level 3 fort w/o a symbol- or else they have very tough apartment blocks.

On the old map there are no such symbols. So I am guessing the map wont change when you blast a fortress with siege arty and destroy it. The info bar tells you what it is, not the new map, and I like the new map, particularly the counters.
If symbols on the map do not change, and IF for amphibious invasion a Port is required, How about port symbols on those coastal hexes that ARE ports?

That's one of them. I do like the newer map better - just easier to read - all but the trenching level of the Italian corps - white on yellow is hard to read! I suspect the citizens of Stuttgart thought the forts were ugly and so forced the authorities to drape them in cammo causing the cartologists to miss them. Well, something like that [8|]

I'm not sure I'm following this since it sounds like you use the new map so, please, be kind if I accidentally offend. The symbols do not go away when destroyed but the fort numbers (in the box, like the old map) get lowered. Stuttgart and others have a fort value number at the beginning but no symbol which I believe was just an oversight - rather easy to do.

I like that idea - one learns them in time but it is confusing for new folks - just like having to guess that one needs to type "a" for an air reccon without the help of the nice box that appears for activating a corps. I was able to figure it out but it was frustrating until I did.
