OK, search has turned up one thread that indicates the left click box (like amphibious, move stack, individual move, etc)has an option for training assault troops once trench level two is reached and assault research is at least level one? However, this doesn't seem to be true. What, pray tell, am I doing wrong? I'd sure like to use my level two storm troopers!

It isn't there at all, ie, not a matter of it not being highlighted. I thought maybe it had to be done in the strategic phase but I couldn't do it there either. One thing I didn't try is during the activation phase.

It should be available only during the Strategic Phase. The unit has to be infantry and either French, British, American or German. It also must be in supply and have some readiness.

I believe that is it (although I don't use the auto-reinforcing). I've likely tried it AFTER I rearmed depleted units and generally, by the time one gets the ability, corps are depleted faster then they can be rearmed so the arms pool is zero. Thanks. Now I know to save some.

I'm kind of curious on the reasoning for that - weren't the assault troops just specially trained to infiltrate the trenches but (except for the US with shotguns) used the same grenades, rifles, etc that they were already equipped with? I never got into that aspect in that amount of detail so I could be way off base.

There was no new "Stoss" technology but the troops were better armed. The cost is therefore like paying to re-arm the unit to "assault" equipment levels and the cost of the additional expenditures including equipment during assault training. In the end however its still just an abstraction.
