Difficulty levels post-patch...

Am downloading the game as I write and just want to hear what difficulty level I should start my first game with.
I read that pre-patch the game was very difficult and most players were recommended to start on easiest level.
Has this changed after the patch?
I'm not a complete newbie to this genre, played both JA2 and Silent Storm, though not an expert at any of them, and I don't want to have a walk in the park.
But I don't want to experience frustratingly hard gameplay either.
So, what would you recommend?
