I have a US patrol squadron (VP-72) which in the database editor I verified was assigned PBY-5a Catalinas. However, when the squadron arrived it arrived with Singapores.

It is assigned to the Central Pacific and the slot number for the squadron is 1916.

Does anybody have any idea why this would happen?

Did you have any PBY's in the pool, I believe that if you dont have enough in the pool you get whats available.
 
Because of arrival timings the RAAF ogten get Spitfire sqns with Hurricances or Beaufighter sqns with Beauforts.

A USN unit shouldn't have gotten a Britsh patrol plane though.  I thought the downgrade would be only with planes in that unit's upgrade path.

I think picking same nationality is a fist option, an ally second. the game engine seems to force an Allied unit onto the map rather than wait for aircraft like on the japanese side.

I'm 99% sure it's not a problem in AE.  I don't work with the air code, but each nationality has it's own pool, so Kittyhawk production for Canada is separate from the RAF and separate from the Australians, etc.

It appears if not enough aircraft are available of the assigned type, AI will create the unit with a smaller number of machines.
If the number of assigned machines is zero, it appears that another aircraft will be assigned. This is almost always the type (or a type)
which will upgrade to the type assigned by the editor.

It also appears that upgrade paths for aircraft are more complex than the manual says or than programmers say. That is, if you look at the upgrade list, it appears more factors matter than are officially supposed to matter. There are even a few cases where the type on the list is impossible = wrong side aircraft - although this you cannot do because the plane count will always be zero and even if it were not zero - code would refuse to use it.

So I think in rare cases it might happen that you get a combination effect - upgrading to an aircraft different than assigned in the upgrade path for THIS unit - even if it is not the general upgrade path.

Note that you can deliberately upgrade across a national line if you want to - by assigning it as the upgrade plane for the type OR for the unit - but this is not often done by modders. In order to get more aircraft types - and to permit historical upgrades - this is however commonly done with minor nations - e.g. Chinese or Dutch planes upgrade to British or American plane types. So sometimes a different nation may actually be in the upgrade list - and on some dates - this might produce this effect - which appears not to apply to this particular case.

Thats why you need idiots doing the testing (maybe you have[8D]) who will hit wrong buttons and try stupid things.

Going on from Sid,
From the CW side, you see a number of Flyiny boat sqns who have a choice of upgrade to Catalina I or PBY5.

If you chose the Catalina the next upgrade is the Sunderland, if you chose the PBY5 your next step is the Mariner.

So if it works forwards i believe it can go backwards if you have insufficient numbers.
