patch feedback and discussions

OK, I've started limited distribution of a patch with all the things talked about recently.
In order to keep discussion somewhat organized, let's put all discussion of specifics of this patch here:

A separate thread per topic will help me be organized. Start a new thread for a new topic.
I don't mean to shuffle all comments there of course. For example, I'd leave the Japan a-bomb discussion here. I only mean to move comments on the implementation *details* and GUI of the new patch to the other location.
