New problem with generators

I had posted this in the general forum, please forgive me.

I was having a problem getting the battle/campaign generators to work, but I fixed that. Now, when I try to create a random campaign, the battle generator starts, and that works fine, it creates a battle.

However, after clicking the "OK" window after a successful creation, I get this error in the campaign generator:

Error (013): Unable to generate random battle 'German Summer 41 (First)- 1st Inf Div'

I'm at a loss at what to do. I'm running Vista 32 SP1. And I've reset my IE7 back to factory just in case. Any ideas?

DirectX is updated, as is the .NET.

Gorg,

Can you generate other campaigns or do they all error out?

Can you generate random battles ok? (With the random battle generator)

Have you added any unit mods or other mods (ie are you stock)?

What exact random campaign settings did you use to generate the campaign, I will test them out if you post them.

Regards

S.

It's stock. I haven't added anything. I've tried numerous times to create a random campaign and it always pops up that error, with different battle names though.

Random battles generate with no issue. As for what settings I used for random campaign, I've tried a bunch, as well as the default that is there when it first starts. Gives me the same problem.

Gorg,

Thanks.

Could you start up a random campaign generator session which you know will break.

Then please list The name of the campaign (eg 1st Infantry Div 1941 Short), the from and to dates, the length and the replacements selected. Next press the build campaign button and then tell me exactly (best with a screen shot) where it breaks.

I will duplicate these settings and see if I can get a stock install to break as well. That will help me find the problem.

You said earlier that
However, after clicking the "OK" window after a successful creation, I get this error in the campaign generator:

Error (013): Unable to generate random battle 'German Summer 41 (First)- 1st Inf Div'

This confused me a bit. Did the campaign generate ok (ie could you play it in PCK) or did it fail?

Regards

S.

Gorg,

Now I am really confused!

On my machine at any rate (and I think this applies to everyone else so far) if I press the big red "Build Campaign" button then I am taken to a "Building Campaign ..." status screen which shows a processing bar slowly filling as the campaign is being built. You shouldn't be able to interact with the random battle generator??? If you have this open before building a campaign then please close it and whilst a campaign is being built please don't attempt to run the random battle generator (RBG). The campaign generator (RCG) calls on the RBG to do its work whilst it is executing, by attempting to run another copy of it in the background you may upset the RCG.

Does this help?

EDIT: Actually the RCG should close down any RBG instances which are running (I tried to break it but I couldn't)! So I have no idea why the RBG is opening up for you during the RCG build process??????? Weird!

Regards

S.

When I click on Generate Campaign, the battle generator starts. I've never used it, so I thought that was supposed to happen. I'm un-installing/re-installing as I type this.

Can't edit for some reason. Anyway, re-installing did not fix this. When I click on "Build campaign", the battle generator starts. If I close that, I get the error I posted the pic of, and it fails.

This makes no sense.

Hmm?????

Do all the other scenario making utilities work as advertised, like the scenario and fixed campaign editors? I am really stumped here. Will think about it some more.

Can you tell me anything else about your machine? Like what protection sofwtare you are running?

If any one else who may be reading this has Gorg's problem could you please post a line so that I can narrow down what is happening in this instance.

Everything else works fine. It's only the campaign generator that gives me a problem. I am running Norton Internet Security 2009, which I've disabled as a test. Geforce 8600GTS, 2Gigs of ram, using onboard sound as my SB Audigy SE sucks.

To recap, click "Build Campaign", battle generator starts. When exiting battle generator, error appears, and campaign fails to generate.

Gorg,

I tried recreating this problem on my set-up and couldn't. It appears to me that after I start the campaign generator, the Random battle generator runs in the background and I don't interface with it at all!

If I can think of anything to try, I will. But oething sounds really whacked with your installs. Can you try maybe re-downloading from Matrix to make sure sothing to get corrupted? Though It would seem strange for everything else to work and not the RCG.

In your first post, you mention you had trouble getting the generators to work, but you fixed that. Can you be more specific about what you fixed and how you fixed it, that might shed light on what's happening now.

(there are a lot smarter folks than me looking at these threads, but I'll toss my 2-cents worth in anyway).

Good luck!
Rick

I had to add that fix to the registry listed in the sticky thread, because when trying to start the generators, notepad would open.

Issue resolved! Thanks in no small part to Stridor, through IM's and lots of head banging and short of re-installing my OS, he solved the problem.

The issue was a pesky registry entry under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\mshta.exe, apparently there was nothing there, so we added "mshta.exe "%1" %*" to it, and that totally fixed the issue.

Thanks again Stridor. You saved me a lot of time and headaches.
