Early Allied fighter pilot exp

Is there any way to get it above 60 other than in combat? Its now almost July 42 and I am still lucky to get a 1:10 kill ratio against my opponents 80+ exp pilots, even when they are flying Oscars and mine are flying P40s and Hurricanes!
He is currently rampaging through India and China and it is pointless trying to CAP any bases as all my fighters die for little or no return (I think he has lost only 130 a/c in a2a since the start of the game, compared to my 1000).
I cannot even use the ground attack option as most of my planes are to short ranged to reach any lightly defended base.....

There is a maximum experience level that pilots can reach through training.
- Chinese, Phillipines - 45
- US Navy, IJ Navy, Canada, Dutch - 50
- IJ Army, New Zealand, French, Indian, British, Commonwealth - 55
- US Army, Soviet - 60
- US Marines, Australian - 65
Your pilots can train above the maximum by flying supply missions or combat missions against an empty base. Otherwise, actual combat is the only way.

P-40s and Hurricanes should deal ok with Oscars, especially the Hurris. Are you getting 1:1 odds in combat? Numbers matter as much as experience.
To answer your question. No, the only way to get pilot training up is combat missions. If you're within range you can use ground attack or airfield attack missions. Word of warning though, fighters that engage cap while on attack missions perform very badly.

Swarm him. At 1:1 you will lose 4:1 easy. At 4:1 you will win 2:1. Don't try to fight fair.
My AVG scored over 100 kills in China by beating up on smaller formations of Nates and Oscars. While this had little strategic effect is did start the bleeding of his pilot pool.

If the Jap player is smart, you did nothing to his pilot pool.

Time is on the side of the Allies. In the long run, the Allied player has an embarrasment of riches in terms of plenty of pilot replacements, plenty of replacement aircraft, and an over-abundance of squadrons. Any Japanese Pilot losses are good for the Allied player.

You dont understand what I mean. A smart Jap player will disband a squadron (especially in China) and get it back 90 days later with a full load of 45 experience pilots that are not drawn from the pilot pool. You then put these bonus pilots to work as before in China as even 45 experience pilots in crappy planes in China is better than the 25 experience and crappier planes the Chinese have. And they will eventually train up.
Now the beauty of this is, once they get up to 75 experience or so, you fly in an air unit from say Burma, disband this 75 experience China unit into it and start the training process all over again. In this way the Jap player keeps a steady stream of replacements going to his line units without even touching his replacement pool pilots.
Edit: This tried and true way of doing replacements is known on the board as "the Mogami method" and has been around for years.

It sure does suck to be Chinese! Considered an easy training ground for the Japanese Pilot pool! I guess the best approach for the Allied player facing the Mogami method is to hide his Chinese squadrons. I haven't tried that before, but I am barely competant yet as a Japanese player.

In my CHS 2.08 game against Chez, my Chinese pilots have given a good accounting of themselves. I have several Chinese aces now flying P40Ns and P66s. Once they got into P43s they cuold stand up to the Oscars fairly decently.

The chinese air units should be kept on the ground, in India.
The way to combat this method is move in front line allied units where ever the Japanese air power raises its head. In the air you have to take the war to Japan, always. The AVG should be used for this, along with the 23rd FG and 24th FG. Hurricanes, if you have a base capable of transferring them into China is useful as well. When I play the Allies, often the first place to get P-38s is the 23rd FG in China. The Mogami method only works so long as there is a backwater training ground for Japan.

Well if the Chinese dont want to play there is always other missions for the fighters. Airfield attack, ground attack.
As for moving the AVG / Hurricanes to China I never said the whole Jap airforce is there. The bulk is in Burma (actually I deploy them pretty much everywhere). If you recall I said to fly a squadron out of Burma, and disband the Chinese unit into it.
The British pilot pool is even weaker than the Japs. I attack British air units whenever I can get them to play.

And by the same token, when a japanese player can swarm the AVG with 3 or 4 to 1 odds, they will do well.
So much of this games air war componant seems to be based on quantity, not quality. Even bad planes with good/fair pilots in large numbers tend to do ok...at least until the Corsairs arrive. [X(]

I still use the Mogami Method. It works like a charm. If the Allies attempt to mess with my backwater, I allocate fighters to cover my trainers. I keep enclaves of air power as well as a reserve. Gotta keep a reserve always.

I have questions about this (mogami) method-
In my PBEM we have a house rule against training by bombing empty bases so it takes quite a while to train an exp 45 Daitai to 60 much less 80. In my game I couldn't afford to leave a huge reserve at home. It always seems like I need every fighter group I can get my hands on and I am still endanger of being outnumbered. Now I have at least 3 Army fighter groups and 6 Naval fighter groups training in Japan and some in China, but it takes so long! My question is how do you balance this? How do you keep enough fighter groups on the front line?
