Allied technical problems (universal????): one solved

I have some problems - so I tried scenario 16 (stock): IT has them too.

1) British and most commonwealth brigades won't divide (Canadians seem to be an exception)

2) AKs can load Allied planes - but not unload them. I do this as Japan without trouble - but for the Allies "transfer to base" and "transfer to ship" are greyed out.

Is there a solution for either?

I think that unloading planes is a function of the " unload troop " button, and not the transfer planes button. That is the ship treats loaded planes the same way it treats loaded troops.

First - one tester says HE can unload planes in the SAME games I cannot. So there is apparently a way.

Second - for Japan - you must select the air unit - and then "transfer to base" or "transfer to ship" -

talking to Joe about it - he said it was an error - that because air units have no load value - they won't unload at all if you hit the "unload cargo" button - and certainly that is the case for Japan

The Allies might be different - I suppose - so I will investigate this possibility. I also asked the tester HOW he was able to unload, procedurally.

El Cid,
Here is the procedure I have used in our game.

1. Assign the air unit to an unrestricted command if necessary.
2. Put the AK you wish to load with crated aircraft in a one ship task force.
3. Access the new task force and hit "load troops" and the air unit should come up as an available choice.
4. Choose the air unit and it loads. It does take up part of the load capacity of the AK so you and Joe must have miscommunicated in some way.
5. If you wish to top off with supplies hit load supplies (by default only planes are loaded).
6. Assign loading ship to a larger task force if desired.
7. When the task force reaches the destination port, the air unit unloads automatically just as troops would. If you had the task force set to do not unload then hit "unload troops and supplies".

If this does not work for you, your files must be corrupted in some fashion. I also think there is a minimum size requirement for the AK to load planes, but I don't remember for sure.

El Cid what I typically do is use the 'LOAD TROOPS' option to load air groups onto AKs and they will automatically offload onto a base that has at least an airfield size of 1. At airfield size 0 they will not unload at all, not even floatplanes.

For some reason it seems to treat them as LCUs for the purpose of loading for transit via ship.

Very interesting. Then all is probably well.

For Japan you must transfer and the unload command fails. Since Joe said it was a bug in the code I assumed that it was true for the Allies as well. It is like production -= diffferent code for both sides.

I have never used the transfer command. That command is greyed out. You load and unload the aircraft as troops/cargo. I tested it at Bombay and San Francisco.

Thanks.

I assume you clicked on the air unit and selected "transfer to base" - that is how the Japanese do it.
Is that correct?

Where did you do this? What location and commands?

Although it seems most unlikely - the procedure for both sides is different. Players familiar with one side may not know how the other side does it.

Same for brigades. The manual says brigades can divide - and most can - but some cannot. At one time I thought this was due to file corruption - but it appears to be a deliberate design choice (otherwise a "feature" - an unintended way code works) that British, Indian and a few CW brigades cannot do so.

Thanks to all who responded.

Ditto, and the japanese planes have such range that I dont think i have ever shipped them anywhere.

Since I am just learning to play the Japanese, I am glad this came up before I had to unload any planes. There are a few short-legged ones that I have on ships at the moment.

For Japan, I've found it works the same if you load them as troops. The main thing is that they will not unload if you have no airfield for them to fly from. Now one thing about loading them as troops, you can't use them the turn they unload, as they will all unload as damaged and need time to repair, at least I've never had any unload ready to go.

Can you load them on a CS and when unloading not suffer the damage?

That I can't say, since I've always used AKs. You might test it on CVEs as well, as that is what Japan used them for historically.
