Old and New

I have but have never played the old version and plan on getting the new one: is there any point in me breaking out the old version?
BOBI is very different. Most people will not play BOBI because of the Stability issues (CTD) that were not fixed.
I would recommend that you go for BOBII (if your PC is able to handle it [ see this link: http://a2asimulations.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=12174 ]).
You can get the game (Download at the Version 2.06) and then wait for the 2.09 self-installer to be released (maybe this week if no issues/problems).
BOBII is sooo much better than BOBI with respect to everthing but it does require a good PC to run with a good video card.
