Converting from 3ds MAX to Milkshape.

One of the problems you will face is that if you are developing your models and texturing/UVWing using 3DS Max due to it's greater tools and ease of use, and then exporting it to Milkshape for final exporting to X format (all the freeware X exporters for 3DS Max suck); is that when you import it your 3DS or OBJ (or whatever) file into Milkshape, it will be grossly grossly oversized due to some vagaries in the import process.

Basically 1 meter in MAX becomes 20 meters in Milkshape. To fix that:

Go to the top menu, pick TOOLS select SCALE ALL, and in the dialog box for "SCALE MESH AND SKELETON", set 5%. Then click OK.

(1/20 = 0.05)

Your mesh should now be properly scaled in Milkshape.

EDIT: Always check each model after you import it from Max; my dragon's teeth import correctly at the right scale, but other things don't. [&:].

Good tip.

I have 3DSMax, but haven't done much with it yet, as I've been trying to get Milkshape down. Soon I may give t another crack.

I don't see how to actually make a model in Fragmotion, only animate. I'm going to need to do some research (again!).

Ryan be very careful from exporting from MAX to MS3D. It breaks your model normals for one thing. (see my other post). This is exactly the same problem SAF_Biffa had as he did a similar thing to you (ie export from MAX to MS3D to X).

So how do you fix model normals in Milkshape?

By using smoothing groups.

It is a pain.
