GPW Questions

Wasn't sure whether to post here or in the general forum. Decided to give this one a try (hey - I go back a ways and played Drang Nach Osten and Unentschieden for a long time).
How do I use mines? Are they a combat multiplier I transfer directly into a combat unit or do I 'create' a shell and transfer them there?
Are conscripts worth the effort or should I stick with rifle?
Supply - I've read and reread the excellent supply tutorial but the distances in this game are pretty significant. Should I still use STAVKA as the 'Big Daddy' central supply point and distribute from there?
