SigInt Issue Discovered in WWII

You've probably heard of it, but this is the first I knew that TEMPEST was discovered during WWII. Here's a link to a declassified paper by the NSA. It's very interesting and only 5 pages long - er, about 2 1/2 pages are redacted! [X(]

Here's the link:

Once upon a time, you would get in some serious doo doo if one even mentioned the word TEMPEST outside of a controlled area.

My, times have changed.

I first heard of it in the very early 90's when it hit the news that researchers/hackers were showing that they could 'read' a CRT from a distance away. Along with the reports were all the rumors of what the government was able to do (and the name TEMPEST), people saying the whole thing was crazy, other people saying it wasn't crazy it was real, etc.

Hi all,

It is real... there are even commercialy availabe devices that can, for example, read keys pressed on keyboard from distance...

HeHe ye there is alot of things our there.

Btw. I recognized the URL address in the link above, the http://www.nsa.gov and I remember something interesting I read for a while ago. It was in a German Computer magazine who had analyzed a windows something folder after a visit to that url and found a bla bla (tecnical name, I'm no expert) type of special coky file, who could not be deleted and who sent logg files back to a external host. Apparently a way to collect statistics and large quantities of electronically analyzed information about the individuals visiting their homepage.

You gave twice, and it's about using cookies. Unless you have taken steps to block them, there are thousands of commercial websites that use the very same technique to do the very same thing. I do NOT endorse the conduct, just letting you know.

Is much ado about nothing. It might be true or false - it was denied and the assertions not proved. It's better to use independently developed crypto anyway. BTW, notice the allegations don't affect Windows XP or later, only earlier versions.

Is pretty much what a lot of debate is about these days. It's the sort of thing NSA does, and doing some of it within the US is supposed to be off-limits, but some politicians of course want total surveillance of their 'subjects'. [8|]

Note that this article does not mention any planting of software on people computers, let alone when they dare visit a public NSA web address.

The conclusion? Be careful - there are people out there who do things that you should be concerned about, and some of them are government people. However, you shouldn't be needlessly worried that visiting public web addresses will result in you waking up with a radio collar locked around your neck. [X(]

Well me it does not bother at all,  but I still don't like Spyware, Cookies or whaterver it is called, whoever that puts them into my webbrowser or computer.  But of course, it does not realy matter when you think about it, its not like we are able to effect it anyways [8D]

I think that we can affect it. First, with pressure on politicians and by voting accordingly.

Second, use appropriate settings on browsers, good add-ons, and other technology. to resist the spyware. PM me if you need some ideas.

And some of that gear they reference and showed in the paper were top of the line stuff, once, specially the rotor stuff. And a lot of that stuff was winding up on Uncle Nikita and Uncle Leonid's desks. Wow! Makes ya wonder how we got out of the 60s and 70s, let alone the 80s.

AMEN, and the S-2 would be finding *interesting* things to reinforce the *oversight* remediation process.

That, and wondering why the new Triple-pane windows had an orange tint (where windows were allowed), building-wide soft music piped everywhere, and the over-pressure AC....[:D]

Gosh, I miss Bavaria....[:(]

I'm struck by the style of writing in the report. Not your typical government-speak.

Probably late 60's/early 70's, before telecom and the *technical* Cold War took off, and the conscious politician came forth....

A lot of Army manuals (the good ones) from that period are printed gold, not the touchy, feely pulps issued today, of this style. Say what you mean - mean what you say, not a verbose verbal fellatio...

My 1970's Ranger Handbook (fits within a butt-pack comfortable) was nearly stolen once, when someone realized its value and the differences over the new ones (load out tables, sample FRAGO/OPORD messages, Mission considerations, examples, ect).

I plan to pass it along to the son, if he chooses the tree-suit route, like his dad...

I dont look at many top secret documents, but I was struck by the writing style too. I always thought reports like that would be sort of bullet points a la:

a) TEMPEST discovered WW2, rediscovered by CIA

b) It does this / Implications

c) Ways to prevent it

d) Mention this to anyone and the Men in black will take you away and feed you to the greys at Area 52.

Instead it was much more journalistic almost, and very readable, like the author knew everyone involved. It's always "we checked for this" and "we discovered this" kind of like its just him and his good friend professor von science researching TEMPEST over a period of years and finding out interesting things.
