The main link is best viewed through Google Translate ... however, to navigate or to get the buttons to link right it's best to use the original link. I use the translated link to start me off at what I'm looking at and (using another web tab) use the GOTO and FIND features to load a map.

The links below provide direct downloading of JPG topo maps. Unfortunatley, you have to guess at which map to get, plus, they are in Russian. Also, the dates are more modern, say from the 50's-2006 ... mostly 1974. And, finally, not all the areas are covered.

Soviet Military Topo Maps - links ... to start you off.

For a standard 1:200,000 map?

I should know this......but at the moment I can't remember. Others will want to know anyway so I'll ask this question for them not knowing and NOT because I'm having a hard time remembering on my own......[8|]

I'm not too sure if the "grid" is standerized from map to map ... but ...

1:50 000 ..... 1cm=500m
1:100 000 ... 1cm=1km
1:200 000 ... 1cm=2km

In the screenshot above (1:100 000) ... 1 grid ~ 2km.
In the screen shot below (1:200 000) ... 1 grid ~ 3km ... I say approximate because it's just over 3km, perhaps 3100-3200m.

Thanks for showing an interest in the topo maps ... I hope they become useful. If you have a particular location to find but you don't have time to go fishing (not to mention brushing up on your cryillic) then let me (or anyone) know.

I'm going to assume the village I'm looking for is the one in the middle with the body of water just to the right of it.....

If that's right by today's standards, again I assume this is a current map, then that village is not so small.

I checked with GM and the terrain matches exactly and it also gives a nice size reference.

In the 1:100,000 map each grid = 1km x 1km (as you would expect). and in the 1:200,000 each grid = 2km x 2km

P.S. From GM you can even see the village + roads - just. GM really needs the next zoom level for russia as it does for most of the rest of the world.

I've never been in GM yet. Just used GE and mapquest. Time I branch out.

Yeah you can zoom in GE as well, but the underlying ground resolution is still quite poor. You can just make out where buildings are but not all and not what type of building. At least you can get a general idea of the village and road layout. It seems that it hasn't changed much in 35 years (74-09).

Yeah, I zoom GE. All I really want is where the buildings are. Not what they are. Normally I even cut back on the size of the village because of postwar growth.

In 60+ years, they have changed anyway. Not to mention those that were destroyed in the fighting.
