Turkey trots to water What will happen when the new version of Windows (whatever the name is) comes out?
Will WITP and AE work with it? Will we have to keep an XP or Vistalaptop at home to play it? The world wonders.[8|]

The new version os Windows 7 and last month people on lifehacker.com gave a site where you could download the beta version, free..Nobody experienced problems with the current WITP that I am aware of..(You had to have Vista to download the beta..

Yes, AE will work fine with Windows 7 (even if something comes up later, we can patch it). WITP should as well. We're just starting Windows 7 beta compatibility testing ourselves though and we won't know what compatibility issues there are for sure until the actual commercial release.

Greets all,

WitP patch .806 works quite well with Windows 7 64-bit edition. In fact, the only reason I do not run it in windowed mode is that letters become too small for my eyes, and thus difficult to read.

My current configuration is Windows 7 on 4 AMD Opteron cores, 3 GB RAM and an nVidia 8800GT with the prerelease version of the nVidia video driver.

The ONLY thing I have had trouble with, is Scenario Editor 6.0, though for some odd reason WitpEditorX works quite well. Ah! And the utilities that rely on 32-bit DLLs do not work either, but that is because I run a 64-bit system, not a limitation of Windows 7 itself.

One thing about WitP it is pretty tolerant of operating systems.  AE is the same way as WitP in that regard except getting it to work on Windows 98 or ME might be tough, only because of the memory limits of those OSs (they don't see more than 512 MB of RAM).

People on the AE team have run AE on Macs and Linux with a Windows emulator.  I've run it on Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, all with no OS  issues.

What about my Radio Shack Tandy computer? Will it run on that? [;)]

Cram in enough RAM and write a Windows emulator and it might. Though it would probably be glacially slow.

The processors for the old Tandys, Colecos, and Ataris had upper memory limits measured in the Kilobytes, so getting around 512MB of RAM in there would involve some pretty tricky engineering something on par with something McGyver would do.

Back in the day, I worked on a very complex system that used 18 Z-80 processors (which was the processor in the TRS-80). We were up against the hard 64 KB memory boundary and it took some fancy engineering to get more data in there. We had some clever tricks we employed. I am so happy that thing is on the dust pile of history. It was a Frankenstein's monster.

I would recommend running the game on something newer, at least less than a decade old. [:)]

A bit more seriously, WitP is backwardly compatible to Windows 98 (possibly 95). I know one person who has run AE on 98, but it must have been shoehorned in there. WitP's and AE's only technology challenges are RAM (video and CPU power are not critical, though the faster the CPU the faster turns process).

Most computers built in this decade have enough RAM to run both games just fine. Additionally, most personal computers built in this decade that don't run Windows natively (run MacOS or Linux) have emulators available. WitP and AE have been known to work with those emulators. Because of this, I anticipate that WitP and AE will likely work on any future versions of Windows, though a relatively minor patch might be necessary depending on what the boys from Redmond decide to do. (Nothing is a sure bet though.)

These games probably won't run on a Palm Pilot of Blackberry either. They probably don't have enough RAM, screen resolution, and I don't believe there are full blown Windows emulators available. (There is Windows CE for portable devices, but it has a lot of limitations compared to the full version of Windows.)

Just to be clear to those who are looking for a serious answer.

Good Photoshop job. The mind boggles at the thought of playing WitP on something that small.

Just me and my mindless babble. I have a terrible short term memory, but a good long term memory. If something gets in there and sticks, it's there for life.

My SO has both (and she claims it's worse than it used to be). When she looks up a phone number, she glances at it, closes the phone book, then gets up and dials the number. I need to keep the phone book open in front of me because I know I will forget the 2nd half of the number halfway through dialing.
Oh, and thanks for the kudos!

Credit where credit it due. I just wrote the code, that was the easy part.
