This is probably in the rulebook somewhere that I cannot find. Are CD units more effective in a port hex than just a beach?
thanks!

CD Units are more effective in a Port hex, because:
Base Fortification for protection, greater supplies, additional support, unit / divisional cohesiveness with HQ units, leadership, etc.
If the CD Unit is located on a beach hex, the unit may suffer from fatigue, disruption, low morale, malaria, etc...

Page 95:
If during combat a defending unit suffers extremely high causalities, it will automatically retreat to an adjacent hex. The hex retreated must be able to trace a valid supply path to a friendly base and cannot be solely occupied by enemy units. If there is no valid hex the unit may surrender.

CD Units occupying a beach will not survive long against a BB TF on a Bombardment mission. Imagine the Jap Player having all 6 BB, 12 CA, and a few DD coming to visit. Then a 2 ship Invasion Task Force landing a garrision unit to capture the beach...

The only beach hex I can identify with putting CD units on is adjacent to the Gili-Gili hex.

Well I was recently trying to capture Shortland from the IJN in an interesting AI game, I bombarded & bombed Shortlands flat for over a week beforehand, yet when my invasion force turned up his CD units tore into my transports & escorting destroyers - several were badly damaged & at least two sunk. And that was after a lot of shelling & bombing!

it is possible that Shortland had a few extra engineers to repair the CD guns and lots of supplies. If you are playing against the AI and have the previous turn saved before your invasion force landed, load the jap player turn and check the status of the CD units and damage of the jap base.
You may need to allocate more heavy bombers and heavier BBs to soften up the enemy, and another week to reduce base supply stockpiles.

As you found out, it takes more then a week of pounding to subdue these mega-bases. The Shortlands starts out as a fairly decent sized base, and given you are attempting to recapture it from the Japanese assumes this is occurring late in the game, so they've had plenty of time to build and fortify.
Pound 'em and starve 'em, its the only way to be sure.
