Shot misses but still critical hit!?

Naval battles. Happened several times.
I shoot at a ship, get the critical hit message, but the shot itself misses.
WAD or bug?

Do you mean you get a shot missed message and a critical hit message? Or do you get a critical hit message and 0 damage? Both sound like bugs but may have different reasons.

not sure it is a bug, most times I see this, it is with leaders and things that do not really show up as damage
you can take out the rudder with doing damage to the hull (well, with in the game system)
you can kill leaders with out killing crew
you can cause panic, with out killing or damaging the ship (but, it don't do anything)
you can jam the sails, with out damaging the sails
you can knock off a ancor, with out damaging the hull
so... not sure it is a bug, but more it don't read right, with the damage report

It is working as designed -- it's a hit in which the damage rounds to zero because of modifiers, but there is still a critical effect (as HS describes it above: say, your first lieutenant is struck by cannonball without anything else being damaged).
I agree the message is misleading in this case, and I will change that in an update.
