So, There I Was...

Running the latest AE build through its paces. I played the first two-day turn as the Allies, and when 12/9 rolled around, began putting the at-sea task forces where I wanted them to go.
When the turn comes to the Lexington TF, I notice to my chagrin that two of the destroyers have flt and eng damage in the low 30's, despite being miles from any combat. "What the deuce?" says I, wondering if yet another bug has raised it's ugly, be-tentacled snout.
However, before sending our intrepid naval team coder a save game, I read the ops report for the past two days, and lo and behold, on the dark and stormy night of December 8, the two destroyers HAD COLLIDED AT SEA!
The fact that I thought it was a bug at first should tell you how rare such an occurrence is. It's very realistic, though, and a little tidbit of why AE is so good.
As of 12/13, the two ships are nearly back to safe harbour (two ports over from Pearl Harbor[:'(]), and so is AE.
Just a little more patience, and you too can have your ships colliding with each other and running aground on sandbars...[;)]

I'm sorry Terminus but I need to know the names/class of the destroyers involved and the "current"commanding officers of those ships.

So, after you have been banned, the AE suddenly started to exist [:D] THX for the info, Terminus, and wellcome back [:)]

Does crew experience alter the odds of this event?..Sounds like a good idea, to have possible "errors" at sea..How about mechanical failure?

Doesn't have to be destroyers, doesn't have to be poor crews...

(Though perhaps willingness to stand up to an Admiral might have helped!)

What affects the chance for a collision? Will the number of ships in a TF, weather condition, crew skill level, etc, make this more common, or is it one of those "once in a game" occurrence?

Ah. Perhaps Capt. Steele can avoid his court martial this time...and two fast battleships won't need a long yard period..but then again, we may find out how fast yards can actually work in the game.

AE has some "random" events that pop up from time to time. A torpedo explodes without warning, ships collide, hit a sandbar, engine breakdowns.
Kaga hit a reef and was out of the Indian Ocean operation because of it. Mutsu blew up in Tokyo bay. Ships collided all the time. There is ample historical justification for it.

Terminus was in command. His court-martial will be held tonight at midnight, rtrapasso will preside over the festivities as he is qualified to deconstruct Termy.
If you would be good enough to round up some of the boys with a canvas sack and some rope to help Termy find the court... [:'(]

So is this a warning that Mutso may not be around after her actual sink date?[;)]
Welcome Back Terminus! I've missed the No's and wagling Toes![:D]
And thanks for sharing this "random event"

In the stock game, there are little "pop up" messages that occur while the turn is running. (For example, I noticed that when there is an Ops loss, a pilot may be forced to bailout, and is moved to a WIA/MIA/POW status, the pop up will state "Maj. Boyington has BAILED OUT, and is CAPTURED.")
Do these random events (collisions, ammo handling accidents, etc, a.k.a. "Ops losses for ships") also have "pop up" messages?

Can those accidents be turned off, if they become too annoying?
