Real time?...Turn based?

I will admit I am an old guy and to me thie whole "real time" is just a fancy illusion. You can't possibly think that what they call real time is real time. It might just be the natural progression from FPS gamesto the so called real time games.
To me a strategic game should be turn based with time to work out your moves and counter moves and then as in this game all go at once. I bought the first Total war game and the battle game just did not do it for me bit then to each his own.

I would like to know if most of the players who like RTS games are young and the guys who like turn based are over say 30 years of age. I'll have to doa poll some day.

Going on 40 and I like all kinds of games even real time. In fact my favorite real time game is Demigod, not a war game but damn fun none the less. When it comes to grand strategy turn base is where it's at. Most all my wargames I prefer turn based, though I do like Close Combat games. I enjoy shooters too, not sure if they would work turn based [:)]

My first experience was Game & Watch Donkey Kong (1982). Guess you could call that game real time. [:D]
Then the story goes on. I am 43 and still play games and will do it as long I can draw a breath.

Prefer turned based before real time when not a mmorpg or fps (who by definition is real time [:)]).

I used to like realtime when it was a new game concept and played the heck out of titles as Warcraft II and Starcraft. However, at past year I rented the new C&C once and got disgusted immediately. Missions that lasted only for 15 min. and objectives shown by arrows. For me there is no sense of accomplishment in 'winning' those games.

What I hate about modern titles is, that they're targeting an audience with low perception and attention spawn. I'm over 40 as well and still the kind of player who can focus for hours and enjoy a steeper learning curve.

Kind of OT post, but I heartily agree - I'm 44 and never liked RTS much (I started with Dune2 though !).
But well, RTS is just not up to the task in strat settings : it wasn't enough for Napoleon to react in 3 secs with his fingers to the enemies ! [:D]

Don't any of you play Take Command: Second Manassas or Conquest of the Aegean?

TC2M is the best "real time" game ever IMHO.
COTA/HTTR (the Airborne Assault series) is an awesome continuous time game. There are many turn-based gamer who, after playing HTTR, never went back.

Oh - I'm 38. I play both. I'm a War in the Pacific addict, and at the rate I'm going, it's both real time and turn based. [:D]

I'm 71 and playing COG, AdvancedTactics, Empire Total War, World of Warcraft, Warhammer Online,Civ IV, Chess, you name it...[:D]

I have a preference for turn-based for 2 reasons: 1) My slower reflexes (compared to 15-year olds) makes it difficult to play games like Call of Duty where you are likely to find yourself fighting cooperating 13-17 year old gangs[X(]; 2) It is not realistic for a player to simultaneously play the role of captain, colonel, general and chief of state in a war, so large RT battles often end up in total confusion with everyone piled up whacking at the nearest enemy[;)]. When I play MTW for example, I play on the strategic map and usually let the computer resolve battles.

The surprising exception is naval combat in Empire Total War, where the number of ships is moderate, one can control formations and give firing orders to groups without breaking formations, as opposed to naval warfare in COG, where the large number of ships, crowded conditions and the inability to give formation orders makes it difficult to coordinate battles.

I bought both COG and Empire TW the same week, which doesn't help reduce the confusion (hey, didn't Austria surrender to me yesterday - why are they attacking me? And what happened to my trade route with Russia?). [:D]

It really depends. As a basis I prefer turn based games, but I think game like Harpoon, Europa Universalis or Hearts of Iron are realyl well designed for deep strategy while being real time. If course, this means the pause key is used lots of times to acess the situation and act.

And I am almost 37, btw.

Other than FPS games, I like turn-based over RTS. The exception is Sins of a Solar Empire and Kohan. I'm 46 btw.

Henri, there are groups of mature gamers who play FPS like Call of Duty. Like you, I used to get frustrated playing with the teenagers. I ended up joining a group called TOG (www.theoldergamers.com) and haven't looked back. Players need to be over 25 to join and they have players into their 70's. I pretty much play Call of Duty 4 every night now. And the weird thing is, when we play against the younger gamers we do well because of strategies rather than reflexes. :)

The only real-time wargames I have liked is Harpoon (in its various incarnations) and HOI.  I don't really count games like Warcraft or Starcraft although I loved both of those, they are not to me something I sit down to play as a wargame, they are more like a FPS to me.

Anyway I have to say I prefer turn based games.  If I wanted to contend with someone in reflexes I would play Squash or something, when I play a wargame I don't want how quickly I react to be a factor.

To each their own, guys I used to play Chess with were often into speed chess, I never played.  Tourny Chess is real time I suppose, as you have a time limit on moves, but its more like Harpoon than Quake.
