Given the vulnerability of air units to land units, it can be very beneficial in terms of PP ratio to sacrifice an airborne division for a few opposing airgroups. This is often possible in southern England where the US stations their Europe bound airforce. Those are sometimes even spotted across the channel coast, so it seems a safe bet for an airbase raid. (the US AI tends to place the aircraft there, but sometimes also players)

Related question: In almost all cases I have tried, the airborne unit arrives in good condition. Losses are possible but seem to appear more likely if you attacked with aircraft first. Does anybody know if this losses at landing are purely random or is the actual air traffic really factoring in? But even after taking losses the airborne unit is usually strong enough to fight vulnerable air groups.

In Sturm und Drang I saw two British air groups and thought about a quick amphib raid with a L2 or L3 division, but they have moved.  I agree there are opportunities to do stuff like this.

Yes, amphib raid is another good way if you have naval superiority. But as axis you run into the auto combat with the Royal Navy upon landing, hence it is less predictable in this situation. So I tended to use paratroopers
