National Morale (happy) going downhill fast!

I'm playing Sweden. Did the same with COG and did really well. However, I am having a downward spiral with the "National Morale, people are happy" (last rating at the bottom of Events) rating that won't quit. Now it's -300 and it's an unhappy rating. The Glory report is climbing 3+ points every turn too. I have tried lowering the taxes from 20 down to 18. I increased welfare from 0 to 4. Other countries like us. All of my supplies are in abundance. I've waited several turns for changes to take effect to no avail, happy is still going down like an elevator without a cable.
What should I try to make my people happy again? [&:]

You know, for a while I was considering purchasing Total War: Empire instead of COG:EE. However, I am concerned that Total War:Empire is too simple. I do not want to play a game in which I romp through Europe every time. I like the sound of your post LarryP, because it makes it sound like the game is a challenge and the only trajectory for a human run faction isn't UP.
What are other players' experiences?

If you play COG:EE with the Advanced Economy option, you will have your brain on overtime each turn. It's a huge balance of many items to juggle. I did better with COG for some reason though. I must be overlooking something.
I have all of the Total War series except for this latest version and since it requires Steam, I won't be purchasing it ever.

Are you producing or importing sufficient consumer products? Wine, textiles, spices, luxuries, etc.?
A low amount of those resources is usually whats responsible for a monthly NM hit. If you are at war you can just go produce victories in the field to help offset that. Playing as Sweden your best option is probably to try to import more of those resources.

HiHi
Only just started and only looked at Russia so far so don't quote me on this, but I too had a massive crash in "Happines", from +40 to -271 and falling ... fast!, think it comes about if you try to alter the 'Feudal Levy' too quickly (? dunno if Sweden has one ? )
In my case I was trying to get rid of the FL as it screws up Merchant income, but it appears you have to balance things out over time as one action can impinge on several different aspects of the game.
Dunno if that helps at all.
All the Best
Peter

Changing levy does create unhappiness! And since it's a long process it create it for some time.
Your best bet is NOT to change it
I would say look at the Moral history in economy... it will tell you exactly what is causing the problem...
Once Nationalism I is avaible I would consider getting this as one of my first upgrade! it is really good in my opinion (maybe not if you play France and you think you'll get victory on the field every 2 turns... )
But first things I would think would be :
Not enough luxuries (including wine and all)
not enough food
Breaking trade every turn ( I don't see why you would do that)
Otherwise I have no idea (your getting your ass kicked every turn? I doubt you'd still be in the war

)

Kingmaker: I have printed out and read the Ralegh hints from the COG group, and he suggests not to change Feudal level, so I have stayed away from that setting. I tweaked it once when NM was in the negative but I put it right back after a turn or two. I chickened out. [X(]
My NM went from like 232 to -300 something. I think it may have been that the wine and cotton wavered too much around 1. I went in and set up some trade lines to bring in lots of both and the NM reversed within three turns. I took several more turns and it kept going towards the positive direction. Then Austria won and it was all over.
Franck: Good advice to look at the Moral History in economy. I keep forgetting about those options. Thanks to both of you Franck and Kingmaker. [&o]
