Royal Weddings

HiHi

In my practice game I finally got someone (Hapsburgs) to agree to a Royal wedding as part of a treaty; well come the agreed date there was me expecting all sorts of fireworks, celibrations in the streets, days of National Rejoicing etc, what did we get, ... bog all!

Given that in the time-setting Royal weddings would have occasioned great celibration etc, how come in the game there appears to be no benifit gained at all, I would have thought that at least the National 'Happiness' would have gone up. ... or conversly am I doing something wrong?

All the Best
Peter

While there's no celebratory graphics, the primary value of Royal Weddings is to create an additional Glory penalty cost to declaring war against the Power with which the Wedding has occurred. So if you impose this on France, say, then the next time they DoW you, they pay additional Glory cost to do so.

National happiness ought to go up, too.

I thought about making national morale go up, but sometimes royal marriages were extremely unpopular, so I decided against it.  I'm not very well read on this subject, just going from a few anecdotal data points.  If someone can cite some sources describing general observations about the preponderate social effects of an international royal marriage, I'd be happy to defer.

HiHi

Sorry Eric this one slipped by me; yes you are quite right some Royal weddings were unpopular, usually on religious grounds, a classic eg being Charles I of England to french princess Henrietta Maria [papist], she compounded it later by refusing to be crowned Queen in a protestant ceremony. When the battle lines were being drawn between the Puritan and Anglican elements in the Country her unpopularity played an important part, so much so that it could be suggested that Charles eventually lost both his Throne and subsequently his head because of his very real love of his Queen; however at the time of their marriage there was nevertheless great celebration throughout the country ... any excuse for a piss up! [:D]

However, those unpopular weddings generally get disproportionate press by historians simply because they could have a divisive effect on a Nation.  In the main Royal weddings could occasion say, the Serfs being given new clothing so they could look smart at the local celebrations’, Apprentices given the day off and a few coppers by City Merchants to drink the couples health, fireworks, parades, special Music composed to mark the occasion, Church services etc. etc. etc.

Keep in mind that Royal weddings were as often as not about securing the succession of the ruling dynasty which encouraged stability in a Realm, something that not only the Ruling classes/Merchants were in favour of, but also your average Bloke in the street was rather keen on too.

While the above is only scratching the surface Eric I would suggest that in the main Royal weddings were occasions of great joy in most countries, hence you would not be out of order in assigning ‘Happiness’ points for one in the game, the exception of course being Republican France but they get enough going for them anyhow.

While I appreciate that it may be a programming Nightmare, in later CoG patches you may even think about extending the Royal Wedding concept to include Minor powers with a Royal house, so for eg Austria arranges a Royal wedding with Montenegro and thereby increases influences with them and gets trading rights/right of passage through their lands sort of thing, it could add a whole new dimention to the game

This may not be as daft as it sounds [:-] as it could be used as a practise ‘Test run’ for any later WCS plans for the CoG/FoF format being used in a Medieval/100yrs war game where Dynastic marriages would play a vital role

Hope I ain’t bored you or over egged the pudding here. [>:]

Thanks to you and all the team for a stuning game, I thought FoF was Brillient but this goes a step further [&o]

All the Best
Peter

when this came up, a question popped up, but I keep it quiet waiting to see some of the replies

What about the French ?

should they be allowed to offer a Royal Wedding ?

should they be forced to accept a Royal Wedding ?

HiHi

Historically I would say "No!" At least not untill Napolean became Emperor (??1808??)

But HS, it is a game, and game mechanics/authentisity may well need bending a tad for game balance etc.

If we did give marriages some national morale value, then we'd have to limit them or this bonus somehow -- otherwise allies would just cheerfully swap treaties with 10 royal marriages each turn.

I think a medieval game with the COG engine would be neat.  We could add a greatly expand the general/diplomat type units to model princesses and bishops and so forth.

I'm drooling. Seriously, you should see the puddle. If you're looking for feedback on this, here's at least one enthusiastic "please do!" [:D]

A medieval style game would be awesome. But for the love of all that is good in this world, streamline that a bit! Shuffling around dozens of diplomats, princessess, merchants, bishops, assassins, and spies in Medieval 2 TW was a serious micromanagment pain.

Just give us a court screen or something where it lists our princesses/diplomats etc and their stats etc, and let us click "Dispatch" to send them to a particular country or mission, and call it good. It's not like Princesses need supply lines or anything, having them be on map units is a bit of a waste and makes them easy to lose track of.
