Waking Up Garrisons

I have two questions about Detailed Battle Commands: (1) Waking up Garrisons; (2) Defending Urban hexes and Forts.

I'll as the second one first as it is simpler: (2) What is the best formation to be in to defend a fort or urban hex? So far I have not seen line as an option with greater than 0% chance to succeed, so i'm guessing it is better to put them in Square? Or is Column better than square? I still do not have the Tech to do Skirmishers.

(1) My 'e' key does not seem to work. Instead, the app seems to think my 'e' key is my 'Ctrl' key. When I hold my cursor over a garrison and hit 'e' what I see on th screen is shown below.

Image

In the image above the active unit in the initiative queue is to the left of the one I'm holding the cursor over. The ative one is the 1st Bde of the 12th Div. As you can see down in the lower left it says: "Ctrl key: Division." The yellow circle shows the unit that I'm actually holding my cursor over, it is a garrison.

Now, with the cursor held over that garrison, I hit 'e' and this is what I see after I hit 'e.'

The garrison (with the yellow circle around it) did not wake up, but the units that have the light-blue highlighting have changed. Evidently the 'e' key actually switches the selection between Division highlighted and Corps/Army highlighted and does not actually wake up fortified or sentry units?

What am I doing wrong here? I'd like to wake up those garrisons so I can move them out and have stronger units defending those objective hexes.

It's actually the 'u' key to wake up garrisons.  Took me awhile to figure that out... that was different from the previous COG.

Oh and I think I found it not listed in the pdf manual but in the Online manual when you hit F1.

Ah yes! 'u' it is!

What about the urban hex defense? Is columns good enough, or should I put them in squares?

Column is better than square in urban hexes, unless you're surrounded.

There is at least one place in the manual that incorrectly states the wake-up key is 'e'; it should be 'u'.  For the first patch, I've fixed the left-click-wake-up behavior, so all you have to do is click on units to wake them up, and have added a message so you get some feedback to know that the unit is now active.

That confusion about the 'e' key was really my only gripe about the game so far Eric! The only other thing is, I'm kinda amazed at how feckless my troops are at forming up into lines here at the start of the 1792 scenario (pretty consistently 10% or 0%), but that is not so much a gripe as an 'in-game' challenge :) Just gotta distribute the new recruits and the Seasoned veterans approrpriately for a year or two until I get things in order . . . Great game guys :) I hope you guys are racking it in like autumn leaves [:D] YOU DESERVE IT!!!
