Line Formation

I was under the impression that units in line formation couldn't enter woods / villages, and units in woods / villages could not change to line formation.

Then I saw a Spanish infantry in a village in line formation.

I'm confused, please enlighten me.

That was the case in CoG1. In CoGEE units in line may enter woods and villages in Line formation.

I've never seen a woods/village hex as one of the move highlighted options.

Also the change to line button is always 0% in woods/village.

It says in the manual: "Units in Line must end movement in Woods and Swamps"

This clearly implies that units in line may enter woods.

However I have never actually managed to enter woods with a unit in line. When I click on the hex, it draws a infantry marker and then does nothing.

Please explain how I can enter woods with units in line, I'm dying of frustration here!

Edit: I had a unit in line, clicked on the woods in the adjacent hex SE of it. It moved south, next turn in moved SW, next turn into another seemingly random hex.

I move into woods in line formation all the time.
It's not always possible, it takes a lot of movement points to enter woods in line formation.
My Jaegers are pretty good at it though and they don't have to end their movement either.
You can't form a line if you're already in the woods.

I've recently been reading about some Civil War battles in what we might refer to in the COG:EE forum as the "other" Peninsular Campaign, and noticed that at some crucial points of certain battles (e.g., Williamsburg, Gaines' Mill) units attempting to move through woods or swamp in line formation became disordered, partly because they were green troops with green officers. I've been thinking that maybe a good addition to FOF would be that units moving through certain terrain types would have an X% chance in line formation would have a chance of becoming disordered, with unit quality and general's ratings modifying that.

I don't know enough about Napoleonic warfare to know whether such a rule would make sense for COG:EE.

Funny, I was just thinking in the exact same vein myself.
It's a good idea.

Sounds like a winner Gil.  :)

Krasny, if you happen to have a save battle, will be happy to look at your particular situation.  It may be you are just unlucky because the units you are trying to move don't have enough MPs to move into the hex.  It takes more mps to move in line to begin with and not all nations can do it well.  Add the terrain mods in and you may simply not have enough mps to get in there.  However, if you have a save you want me to look at, I could figure it out in better detail.

Is there a chart with terrain move costs by formation?

The one in the manual is rather uninformative.

...ok Gil... but if you put it in as a rule add it as an option... I like the way it plays right now.

I think there is a bug in the ZOC rules as I understand them.

My infantry unit in line refused to enter a village hex that was adjacent to a lone enemy unit, ie. it is entering a ZOC. However my unit was not in a ZOC at the start of it's putative move, and it had 11 MP, so it should have been able to enter an adjacent village it was facing.

And my unit wasn't pinned either

Ignore the previous post. I have zipped both save files into a archive.

Rename Save.txt to Save.zip.

The active unit cannot enter the hex to it's north.

Load the game up, hit enter, and you should see a highlighted infantry unit with a village hex to it's north, a hex further north is a spanish unit.

That seems appropriate. So, how about a % chance to exit woods with a facing change, too? Often units veered off from their intended direction and wound up facing the wrong way.
