It could be Harris Steele of Brunswick, Georgia.  After graduating from Glynn Academy in 1944, Harris joined the Marine Corps.  Upon finishing boot camp, he was sent to the Pacific where he took part in the invasion of Iwo Jima.  Almost immediately upon exiting his landing craft he was shot in the head an killed.  Harris came from a very small family and there may not be ten people alive today who remember him.  He never got a chance to have a family or live a full life; to get embarrassed at his wedding or thrll at the birth of a daughter or teach a son to throw a baseball.  Instead his remains were shipped home, there was a ceremony, and then the decades passed and those who knew him and loved him have all passed away.  Harris's marker is anonymously located among thousdands of headstones in Brunswick's Palmetto Cemetery, where just a few leaves blowing across his grave were the only visitors he received today.   

Subject was not killed in action - died years after the war - a household name. Google him and you get ~ a million results.

And, we are finding more of them everyday....The churches I have served had some similar. The earliest I recall had the bottom date in 1778. The last one of these I saw had that date in 2006.

Dan--that was a beautiful bio you wrote.

I was simply trying to show my respect to a man who, despite his success, fame and fortune, clearly considered his service in the USMC as his most significant achievement in life. He died more than 40 years after the end of WW2, and could have wanted to be remembered as an Oscar winning actor, a big film star, or whatever. Instead he choose "PFC U. S. Marine Corps"

How many guys we got like that in Hollywood today?

I have to tell you when I saw this thread (just your first post) I was really pissed off. Seeing this last post you wrote makes all the difference. I wish you had posted at least some of this in your first post so that more of us would have understood what you were doing instead of just letting us get pissed off thinking that indeed you were being disrespectful (which you have now explained you were obviously not). A little communication can go a long way.

Now that you have explained it, I agree. I think it says a lot about Lee Marvin's character. He kept sight of what mattered.

Swearing at the beginning of a post might be taken as disrespectful by some...or maybe just hypocritical.
