Suddenly about 20% of all pilots in every Airgroup are gone. Their planes are still there and ready, but the pilots have disappeared.
Replacements are off, so this aren't simply "empty replacement planes".

Why does this happen?

Pilot bug ... when the pilot database gets too full it starts culling pilots. Something like 20K pilots - overloading groups with pilots & having too many large groups from a mod perspective can create this problem. It is a known bug and there are a few threads on this...

redoing the last turn helps here? i hope so, because historiker and i are in july 1942 in our game now.

As above, could be the pilot bug, but July 1942 is a bit early to usually have this happen... it is much more prone to happen in stock where there are an oversupply of pilots and planes (compared to reality).

Another possibility is that the pilots in the unit have >100 missions, and this tends to happen in groups and then they "suddenly" disappear... if you have a previous save, go back and check to see how many missions the vanished pilots have.

For some reason, the withdrawals tend to happen en masse.

There are several chunks of code that remove pilots - mostly or all for the purpose of avoiding pilot array overflow - some of these seem to work "en masse" as they kick in when certain thresholds are hit. If this is a stock game, then I'm surprised to see much of this in 1942, because most players haven't had issues until 1944-45. But if this is a mod then perhaps the mod has more pilots than stock and so the issue happens sooner.

no it was not a stock game. i am in a stock game now (july 1942) and never had this problem there.

the game between historiker and me was a CHS modification with alot of extra units. historiker told me, that he overstacked his flying units with 2x or even 3x more pilots then needed. it seems, that this caused the problem.

what i learn from this game:

never play a game other then stock or a old and tested mod. no more experimential MODS for me.

There have already been a couple of patches to alleviate the bug, but if you mod the game with more pilots, you are just going to get it again...

As for 1.807, it was scheduled to be released last June, iirc... [X(] [:'(] , however, AE development has taken precedence, and the release of any patches will be after AE, i think.

can someone give me a hint, the pilot limit of 20K is it for allies only ?
Do the Japanese have another limit ?

I think it is 20k together

Tracker counts up to 30K pilot slots, but whether that gets purged before I don't know cause I've never had the chance to test this bug as it has never happened to me yet, so that is the scoop.
The Limit I believe is combined totals, but once again I can't verify that.

In the original release of WITP it was ~20K altogether - subsequently we raised it to ~30k altogether.
