Great Brigade battles

I know I have never praised a game as much as I have this one, but the brigade level tactical battles are outstanding!

The timing of Cavalry charges, the positioning of artillery, the use of skirmishers, forming squares to hold off the cavalry then switching to line when the infantry comes up, seeing your ordinary troops break while your elites hold their ground, seeing the enemy on the verge of breaking only to have them take heart when their reinforcements come up - there is so much to this game.

If you use cavalry against fresh infantry, nothing much will happen as they will simply form square. But if you charge tired or poor quality troops - your charge can be devastating.

However forcing fresh troops to form square can also be devastating - if you can bring up some infantry or artillery to pound the massed formation.

Also, the tactical superiority of your troops really shows - those tactical advances can make or break a battle. If your troops can send out skirmishers but the enemy can't, you can really use this to your advantage.

I could go on and on. but this game shows the tactical richness of Napoleonic warfare like no other.

Well done, WCS!

I agree COGEE is a fantastic game. But it comes as no surprise given their other creations.

Forge of Freedom is awesome just the same! It shows the tactical richness of mid-19th century warfare (during the period when smooth-bore was eclipsed by rifled muzzle loaders, and when breach loaders began to prevail).

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to play Forge of Freedom next. If I can ever stop playing COGEE.

I don't enjoy single player nearly as much. I guess I'll have to play something like the Netherlands or Bavaria next. The game seems to easy to me against the AI. But appart from that it IS a really nice game. I think I'll try FoF. I guess the AI is probably better there where there is no diplomacy.
