Was that movie a true story?

Saving private ryan was a hollywood film, nothing was based on an actual action, but the story was written around certain facts like the Sulivan brothers (5 brothers killed on a ship).

Great movie and great story no less, however nothing was based on actual facts.

No, it wasn't true.  There were lots of "artistic license" inaccuracies in the movie, but nearly every World War II veteran I've talked to about the movie liked it, including my father.  They felt it did a petty good job of portraying the horror of combat.

Compare Saving Private Ryan to cesspool material like "Precious Aquatic-Origin Gem Port" and "Thin Red Line."

I believe that there was some sort of minor fistycuffs between various people at around the time the film was set, so that part might be based in truth. [:D]

It was just Americans and Germans, I think...[8|]

If somebody wants to do a movie, Saving Private Messier, about Canadians who landed at Normandy and then struggle against Poles conscripted into the German defense forces and posted at Juno Beach, nothing is stopping them.

Or if somebody would like to do a story about determined Dutch resistance fighters, nothing stopping them.

...or about Italians against the Brits.

...or about Greeks against Bulgarian facists.

...or Vlasov Russians against the Russian army.

...or Romanians who switch sides and fights against the Vlasovs.

...etc.

According to Ambrose, there was a mother who lost three sons in about a week around the time of the Normandy landings, and the last son was pulled out of action. Their name wasn't Ryan, and I doubt historical accuracy was first in the priority list for Spielberg/Hanks. But every vet I've talked to said the only thing missing was the smell.

Good Lord, The Thin Red Line was awful...

"sucked" is synonymous with "awful" - actually, sucked means worse than awful.

My apologies. That movie defied the laws of nature by sucking and blowing at the same time...

Maybe Sean Penn and Ben Aflack will spend eternity viewing those two movies in endless repetition.

Or if somebody would like to do a story about determined Dutch resistance fighters, nothing stopping them.

Saw this movie last year about the Dutch Resistance....wasn't too bad!

Black Book is a 2007 Dutch film set in occupied Holland toward the end of WWII.

The film revolves around a beautiful young Jewish woman who struggles to remain hidden from the Gestapo, and eventually joins the Dutch Resistance.

Yes, there is a bit of a love story in here, but it's not the central theme of the movie.

The twisting, turning plot keeps the movie going at a good pace. I also liked how it's portrayed that even though the Reich is on its death-bed, it's business as usual for the Germans in occupied Holland.

Not for the squeamish though....graphic killings, a few nudey scenes (including full frontal shot of a very fat German dude), and a very disturbing "Jackass" type scene that might make you re-taste your popcorn.

Curious what the experts in here thought of the German vehicles and uniforms...were they authentic looking?
I think maybe they used the same German reenactor group used in Saving Private Ryan. I recognized a few vehicles that looked like the same ones in this film.

Also, 90% of the film is spoken in Dutch with English subtitles. However, there are no a-list Hollywood actors in this film to muck it up.

Overall, not the most interesting war movie I've seen, but far from the worst!

For a man trying to recover from his WitP addiction it sure seems to me that Canoerebel spends a great amount of time on the Forum.  For a recovering addict is this a good or bad thing?
