You can laugh all you want, but up until the middle of the war the Allies would have been gratefull to have this "mobile junk" available in the Asian and Western pacific theaters...

That says rather less about the tankettes than it does about the quality of equipment opposing them. Trash, like nearly all Jap ground force equipment.

Sounds like they had both weaknesses and strengths, depending on context. Obviously on the plains of Russia, nearly useless. Also perhaps on a mostly flat barren atoll = useless? But in a jungle-infested, hilly, backwoods context with narrow windy roads lots of small bridges, etc., I could see these being fairly effective.

A good HE round would probably take them out.

You'd be quite incorrect. The Jap tankettes had pretty poor suspension, and not enough mass to "push through" the terrain the way a real tank could. They were also undercrewed, and suffered from the same lack of vision that all tanks do. Thus, piss-poor everywhere.

No.., they didn't. Japanese INFANTRY won those campaigns. These mobile junkpiles were just along for the ride, and to be filmed in newsreels so the rest of the world could see that the Empire had "tanks" like everyone else.
