How easy is it to find opponents?

I'm considering buying this game, and I was wondering what yall's assesment of it was. Is it worth 50$? Is it relatively easy to find opponents for pbem?
There are usually a few players atleast up for a challenge, as to if the game is worth the money? I've probably spent aprox 100 hrs playing vs the AI, so an easy yes for me [:)]
