OK, in detailed combat I often get the chance to encircle serveral brigades from the enemy. sooner or later they surrender to me.
Sometimes the AI splitts a brigade. Then you will see two units of 31st CSA inf for example.
What if you can make one part surrender to you and the other part gets away ?
Will the brigade be gone or just be reinforced from capms ?
Another question : How to kill a dividion container or better, a corps contaner ?
[&o] great game !

On page 38 of the manual you can see a picture describing the
"Controls and Details for Armies, Corps, and Divisions"
The "big blue X" will disband the unit.
edit: i misunderstood ... you want to kill a container in detailed combat.
don't think it's possible.

To "kill" an enemy container you will need to capture ALL brigades that are in it during battle. Then you will see " "container" is destroyed because it is an empty container in enemy territory"

Yes, I'm familiar with this.
In my current game I was moving IV corps into Fredericksburg, but it just contained a general. Longstreet drove McClellan back across the Potomac, but IV corps stupidly advanced into Virginia, and was removed because it was empty.
Very annoying.

The AI is pretty smart and it's not easy to surround a container and destroy it while it happens all the time to the human player. Anyway yea, if you want to get rid of a container, you must capture/destroy all of its units, also if you beat in instant/quick/detailed battle a container and it can't retreat to a friendly region, all those units will be destroyed/captured and the container will be removed as terje said.
I.E. send Butler to NO and then up to Baton Rouge. If he gets defeated all his bdes will surrender and since the container CANT capture the region of New Orleans behind Baton Rouge (not adjacent to friendly regions) even after you conquered NO, that container will be lost. (Im talking of Baton failure to retreat to friendly region, you can save the container if u get beaten in NO and u got fleet at the mississipi mouth but not in BR even if your fleet is in NO).

I'm not sure if an explanation is needed, but since there are a number of new players around these days, I might as well... "Containers" represent staff officers, which is why they can be easily destroyed by the enemy when there are no units in them: think of a bunch of adjutants and lieutenants, not to mention a handful of foreign observers, riding around on horses with just a company of riflemen or cavalry to protect them. They'd get captured in no time. So if anyone ever wondered why empty containers are automatically destroyed when left in enemy territory, that's why. (Insert NBC's "The more you know..." graphic here.)

But generals can ride across enemy territory alone without any problems [;)]

Heh, terje... Down to the point again.
This should be changed in my opinion.

Of course it should... but it's not so important. What instead is VERY important is for the "reinforce to" bdes and general to use all rail points available instead of marching. Since they move after you click the end turn, those rail points would still be lost anyway and it's a pain to see bdes not moving with "reinforce to" due to weather/terrain restrictions.
Nothing unsolvable...you can still move them next turn with the rail but that's a lot of micromanagement. Again, i've witnessed rail moves across enemy territory and that should change too and first as priority.

EEEK! It sounds like you want less micromanagement?! Shoo! Shoo I said! [:D]
And rail moves, what are you, playing the Northern agressors or something [;)]
But to be honest, that would indeed be a fine addition, I agree.
