God help me, I've decided to do an AAR. I can't promise it will be good. Hell, I can't even promise it won't totally suck. However, if nothing else, my no-doubt monumental rookie player screw-ups may be good for a laugh....

December 8th, 1941, Supreme Allied Commander, Pacific Theater 88l71 stared at a huge map of the Pacific Ocean stretching from the western coast of the United States to the western coast of India and Australia. Numerous reports were still arriving from all over the Pacific. The Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor, inflicting heavy damage on US warships. Wake Island and Batan Island had fallen to enemy amphibious invasions, while more Japanese troops had come ashore on Khota Baru, Aparri, Vigan, Legaspi, and Guam.

What he saw on the map was, to say the least, discouraging. Allied forces were scattered around the theater, many hundreds if not thousands of miles away from the front lines. Air squadrons flew obsolete aircraft from bases with inadequate support personnel while many said support troops could be found stationed at bases with no aircraft at all. Ships were similarly scattered, bases were low on fuel and supplies, leaders were poor, many troops were so raw 88 wondered if they even knew which end of the rifle to point at the enemy. The Japanese were bombarding with large naval forces and had superior numbers. Retaliatory strikes by his aircraft had done nothing aside from dump valuable ordinance into the ocean, while his planes were doing a good job of providing ducks for a Japanese shooting gallery.

Something would have to be done....but what?

*note - I haven't said anything about Allied orders yet, I'm still working on that, just thought I'd go ahead and post my opener while taking a break....orders and turn will come shortly.

At Supreme Allied Commander Pacific Theater HQ is a scene of seeming chaos. Staff officers running in and out, map counters being shifted, orders transmitted, typewriters clattering, 88 cursing and guzzling cup after cup of coffee.

Supreme Command has issued the following orders:

Everything on the US west coast that can float is to load up everything not nailed down, (and to attempt to pry up everything that IS nailed down) to the last 30.06 cartridge and paperweight that can be stuffed into all avaliable space aboard ship, and head to Pearl Harbor. Once there the convoys will be split up, reorganized, and distributed to Australia, Midway, and the South Pacific, while others will go back to the US to begin the whole thing all over again.

All SouthPac, Centpac, and Australian north and east coast bases with engineers present are to expand airfields and ports to maximum possible size - supplies and units are coming, and they had better be ready.

Malaya: Aircraft of all types begin landing on Singapore's damaged airfield, while engineers get to work conducting runway repairs, patching up damaged aircraft, and improving defensive positions. Aviation support and engineer troops from elsewhere in the region are headed to Singapore while combat units in other bases are instructed to fight delaying actions against the enemy for as long as possible and then retreat to "the Gibraltar of the east." Unfortunately I wasn't able to pull out the Hudsons from Khota Baru as all aircraft were listed as damaged.

To the north, in Burma and India, a defense in depth is planned. The first strongpoint will be in Rangoon, while a second line of defense is forming around Mandalay-Akyab-Laisho, and the third so-called Alamo Line along the Ledo-Kohima-Chandpur axis. Chinese troops in Yunan attached to SEAC march to Lashio.

In the DEI area, all units are to fortify their positions. In Java units are to concentrate in Batavia with a smaller group in Soerbaja, along with avaliable aircraft. To support air operations, a unit of Lockheed transports transfers to Soerbaja and begins picking up troops from the 10th DAF, which was moved to SWPAC control to facilitate redeployment. A small task force departs for Benkolen to pick up the 16th DAF Base Force.

In the Phillippines, troops are ordered to fortify positions while aviation support units are to retreat to Clark/Manila. The 19th BG, equipped with B-17's, has been pulled out of the area, rebased in Darwin under the command of SW Pacific.

On Rabaul #1 RAAF reassigned to SWPAC for evacuation, while the air groups are pulled back to Port Moresby.

Insufficient Political Points left to change HQ's for anything else.

I tried to get the Catalinas in PM to pick up the RAAF support troops from Rabaul, but for some weird reason the "pick up troops" option was grayed out despite the fact that 2 LCU's at the base were (apparently) in range and assigned to non-restricted HQ's.

US mega sub transport TF formed of all "named" subs in PI and sent to Singapore to split up and evacuate cadres of LCU's from the area.

FO I. Irwin, a P-40B pilot with the USAAF 3rd FS is currently the top Allied pilot with 2 kills.

I'm sure I forgot a bunch of stuff but the more I get taken care of the less there is to do....that's why I decided to play as the Allies as if you screw up early it isn't necessarily crippling.

I don't really care about how many people read this, I'm just doing it for fun, and as a backup to my notes on the game for future reference. Besides, I'm playing against the AI, not a human, so it probably won't be as interesting.

About your inability to airlift troops, does not the planes need to be in the base you want to airlift from? Not really sure but believe I've read something about that.

Thanks for reading/posting. Terje439, I figured out what happened - I got it to work by setting the "supply" mission for my PM Catalinas, then "set target" to Rabaul, at which point the "pick up troops" button popped up.

I was hoping to have the turn out by now, but had to perform unexpected long-distance road trip and I've just now gotten back and had something to eat. I started a little earlier this afternoon so probably in a couple hours everything will be ready to go (I work a night job so I'm used to being awake all night, and I don't work Sundays)

12/9/41:

PH convoys are busy loading supplies/fuel/troops and should leave port shortly. 2 combat ship TF's (BB Colorado and DD's, Sara with CL and DD's) and subs from San Fran are heading out to Pearl already.

At Pearl Harbor, all fighters are on training missions while bombers and patrol planes are on naval and ASW search to gain experience and hopefully sink/damage some enemy subs.

In Port Moresby, 1 Catalina squadron is picking up RAAF Base Force and another a small contingent of Lark Force, while the third is on naval search.

The Hudsons at Khota Baru repaired from last turn go to Singapore.

In India, AK's in Karachi head for Diamond Harbor, and numerous ground troops on inland bases in India are heading for the region around Calcutta to start filling out my defensive positions. After looking at the map and the section in the manual about logistics I'm liking the Kohima-Imphal area more and more as a main defensive base as its closer to the resource bases in India, the proximity to railroads, and I have several decent-sized airfields and ports nearby, while to the south the only port I have is Akyab which is size 0(1) and the Japanese will have size 4 airfields at Tavoy and Moulmein as I don't plan to make a major effort there so I don't see the supply situation being very good. However I will still make the Japanese bleed as much as possible for the Mandalay-Akyab area along with Rangoon.

In the DEI I continue to pull out ships toward Australia, though I am sending some tankers to Palembang to load up as much oil at the base as possible, where I'll ship it on to Perth. TK Angelina also loads oil in Tarakan and will head for Australia.

In the Phillippines:

Destroyers in Manila head for Kendari, they will refuel there and then go to Oz.

P-26 squadron at Clark head for Iloilo - they have the shortest legs (most vulnerable to being stranded) and I have manual upgrade set so I don't really care if they are hardly first line aircraft.

I spend most of remaining PP to airlift 119th USN Base Force via Dutch flying boats (LCU transferred to SWPAC) as enemy TF containing CV is reported E. of Davao and naval evac seems a risky proposition at best.

I need to figure out what I am going to do in China. I really am clueless here, so any suggestions from the peanut gallery would be helpful. Ditto for the rest of the DEI aside from Java.

Once again I probably forgot a bunch of important stuff, but once set in motion many things will take care of themselves for awhile, thus shrinking the list of tasks I need to perform each turn....at least, that's what I'm hoping.

At least as the Allies I know mistakes aren't as costly, at least against the AI, I'm sure a human player could wipe the floor with me but with well over 1000 turns to go before 1946 hopefully I will be a much more saavy player by the war's end, and I fully intend to finish my game, however long it takes.

Another thing is I've played a LOT of PacWar and it will require a mental shift to get used to the differences in scale/scope of WitP.

One more Annoying Newb Question (TM):

The manual states certain bases get a daily allotment of supplies over/above what is produced by any resources at the base. Is there anywhere that says which bases, and how much supply?

I got a request for more details regarding strategy, so Supreme Allied Command Pacific Theater has issued the following memo to all high-level HQ's:


Tentative Strategy For Defeating Japan

Unfortunately, it is clear that we have severely underestimated the capability of Japan's armed forces. Thus, our old war plans have been rendered irrelevant by events and we must make a new objective assessment of the war situation:

It is to my regret that we do not yet have the capability to halt the Japanese advance. The Phillippines and Malaya cannot be held with the forces avaliable and present level of enemy commitment in these areas. However, we will not simply hand over territory to the enemy.

The following factors merit consideration:

1. Our forces, as mentioned previously, are widely dispersed and scattered over a vast territory.
2. The enemy has shown his ability to use seapower to hit us where we are weak and seize the initiative.
3. The performance of our aircraft and pilots relative to the enemy is not encouraging.
4. The enemy is well-equipped, skilled, and highly motivated.
5. Japan's economy is much inferior to our own.
6. Japan must seize resources that she needs to continue the war, and must be able to transport said resources to where they are needed.
7. Japan cannot afford to win a protracted war.
8. As the enemy advances his lines of supply will become longer and harder to secure, while we will be able to focus on defending a smaller area.
9. Massive reinforcements are scheduled to arrive, but the majority will take over a year to become avaliable.

It stands to reason, then, that our best chance against the enemy is simply to delay his advance where possible but avoid taking undue risks. Attrition tactics will inevitably work in our favor. We must identify areas where we can trade space for time.

Priorities/deployment for 1941-42:

SEAC - Burma/India region has been detailed previously - defense in depth.

Phillippines - Defense of Manila/Clark/Bataan area while evacuating as much shipping/supplies as we can along with small detachments of troops when possible.

Dutch East Indies - Main effort to be made in Java as outlined before. Hold as long as possible and save as much as possible, specifically aviation assets and engineer support.

Australia/SWPac - Northern coast (Dutch and Australian forces) and Eastern bases (Australian and US assets) along with Port Moresby

South Pacific - Noumea, Suva, Pago-Pago, Canton, Palmyra (Primarily US assets with Australian and New Zealand forces as PP's become avaliable) in order to safeguard LOC's to Australia. New Zealand will also be developed as situation permits.

CentPac - defense of Midway and Johnston Island with naval assets deployed to protect SouthPac/SWPac if necessary.

Plans subject to change as situation develops and enemy intentions become futher known.

Once stong bastions are established offensive operations will commence. Probing attacks by naval assets and LBA, along with strong air reconnaisance missions, will be used to determine Japanese deployments and offensives will be conducted accordingly, primarily in the south/southwest Pacific sectors. The chief limiting factors will be sustainability of logistical support and quality and quantity of naval/air forces avaliable. Of maximum importance is the coordination of combined arms, particularly naval and air operations. Small steps will be taken first, with care taken to avoid becoming overly ambitious or over-extended, with the scope of operations to be expanded as resources allow.

"Attrition tactics" in the initial phase of the war is to be interpreted as the attempt to inflict losses on the enemy while at the same time minimizing the risk to Allied forces, particularly carriers. Therefore carriers will only be committed to defensive operations if absolutely necessary, as the aircraft carrier, because of its high mobility, is primarily an offensive weapon.

Japanese hopes for sucess revolve around speed, they cannot afford to get involved in a protracted war with inferior industrial production. They can only get weaker, while we can only get stronger in terms of both quality and quantity. Their naval philosophy centers on fighting, if possible, a single massive decisive engagement which will destroy the enemy fleet at one stroke. We should not, under any circumstances, fight the kind of war the enemy wants to fight. Instead we should attempt to destabilize the enemy battleplan by striking where he is weak, looking to divert his battlefleet from the intended objective and force him into an engagement on our terms.

Our submarines, once evacuation of cadres of valuable personnel is complete, will begin aggressive operations against enemy merchant shipping.

And now, to the combat results:

Well, 2 destroyers went down escaping from Hong Kong, but better lost at sea than captured in port.

On the other hand, USN Dauntless pilots extract some revenge for the loss of Wake. I didn't see any messages about sinkings, but if you're on a light cruiser or destroyer and are hit by 1,000 lb. bombs, that's got to seriously ruin your day....

The Japanese capture a few more expendable bases, P-40's do badly against A6M's over the PI, and the British continue providing Japanese sailors with free sushi while still failing to hit anything. 88 reccomends pilots of Lady Lex's VB-2 and VS-2 send Singapore a pamphlet entitled "How Sink Japs and Influence Tojo"

I left Lex on her original mission as in 4 of the past 5 test-starts Wake managed to defeat the Japanese and I thought she might catch some enemy shipping in the area...naturally playing "for real" the Japs got lucky and I, scatterbrained person I am, didn't send her back home last turn. I will order Lex to retire to Pearl next orders phase in case the Japanese fly in any land-based bombers.

About Akyab. Against a human opponent I've discovered that it is best to leave that base to the enemy, the problem is that there is only paths leading north from the city, meaning that it takes forever to leave the city again, and as you stated there are airports nearby to the south that the Japanese can use to close of Akyab harbour.

Japanese supply routes are overall much better than my own (ports, rail net) as I have no ports and only 1 resource base (Changsha) is sitting on a railroad, while the majority of my supply is via roads.

Every base has an air base force though only 2 have aircraft present, and at Chengtu are based on a size 1 (!!) airfield.

I'm not sure what a War Area HQ is...would it be equivalent to say the US 10th Army HQ?

The Japanese have been hitting Changsha and troops in vicinity and I have ABF unit along with a size 3 airfield...looks like a good location to deploy some fighters. Those I-16's don't have much in the way of range...or performance...or good pilots, but they are better than no fighter cover at all and they can get some much-needed experience.

I also send the 11th CFS to Lanchow, where it will make another hop to Yenen to protect war production from the nearby Japanese airfield at Chengting, and Hengchow gets the I-15's of the 25th CFS.

Wuchow is expanding airfields and once they get to size 2 I will move in some fighters there as well.

In Malaya, Blenheims of 62 sqn move to Rangoon. I will have to start thinking about getting the Vildebeests out of Singapore soon, as their range will only allow them to escape via Georgetown-Victoria Point route.

17th DAF is reassigned to SWPac and begins redeployment. The USN surface TF at Borneo moves out for Soerbaja to join the other warships already there.

In the Philippines, the 2 tankers at Manila load fuel for Oz, AVD at Puerto Princesa heads to Balikpapan (then on to Darwin) while the 105th and 101st USAAF Base Forces at Naga board ship for Australia. At Davao, P-35's from Clark join the P-26 squadron that flew out last turn.

USS Lexington TF is ordered back to Pearl Harbor in case the enemy moves any bombers to Wake.

Combat phase 12/10/41:

The British planes at Singapore, hearing of the American success at Wake, decide that no way are they going to be shown up by the Yanks and manage to put a bomb into AP Heiyo Maru, reporting heavy damage and seeing large secondary explosions.

Hong Kong is still holding out, and Allied troops continue making the enemy pay for Malaya. I don't think DD Scout will make it, though.

The Dutch Air Force decides to get in the war and aim high by attacking a Japanese carrier TF, though no hits are scored.

The first Allied airstrike of the war against an enemy land target takes place over Bangkok. Bomb damage is reported minimal, but 88 congratulates the Buffalo pilots in downing one Oscar and protecting the bombers despite being outnumbered 3:1. One Buffalo was damaged but none shot down.

The Japanese capture Makin - 88 congratulates the awesome ability of the Japanese Navy to take completely undefended bases and still suffer casualties to the landing force.

Whoever said it was possible to "sneak" ships out of Manila in small numbers apparently is luckier than I - look at what happened to one of my tankers - but better to have fuel/supply up in flames or lost at sea than let the enemy have it, and the Japanese have taken to bombing the port now...

Interesting the Japanese have not launched any further bombing raids against Singapore's airfields....

PH TF's disbanded as there is currently no need for them.

Aviation support in Singapore is nearly caught up with demand. If the base holds out and the Japanese continue sending shipping to Malaya, my pilots might get good enough to do some damage to the enemy.

I-16's in Changsha target enemy ground unit NE of hex to gain some exp and hopefully provide us with some recon. Some fighters are ordered to remain on CAP in case enemy bombers show up.

Mostly continuing to reorganize my units.

Midway could use some supplies, especially as it's going to be a big sub base soon so I load up a couple 4500 cap AK's and an AO with fuel at Pearl Harbor.

That Chinese squadron I was going to move to Yenen gets transferred there.

PoW TF has now reached the midway point of its escape, at Andaman Island.

The 93rd BS, a B-17 unit in the PI, has flown to Darwin under SWPAC command.

In Hawaii SouthPac's B-17 group flies to Palmyra and there is joined by the P-40E's attached to thesame HQ. The leftover P-40's at Pearl were merged into 46th Fighter Squadron.

The 6th and 34th Fighter Squadrons, which I moved earlier to the south Phillippines, have escaped the area to Menado.

There is still much reorganizing to do and it is rather tedious, but I figure by doing it in small bite-size pieces I will have the majority of the stuff I want evacuated out of the immediate front line regions, or redeployed for defense work, by the time the last defenders of Luzon and Malaya have fallen.

I will have mega-work to do once those convoys from the States start arriving in Hawaii.

US naval force arrives in Soerbaja from Borneo and Palembang's CA's head to link up with the numerous forces in the region. I'm going to try to create 2+ SCTF's to hopefully repel enemy amphib landings on Java.

Mostly I think it would help me to just relax. I get annoyed when I overlook something, maybe it has to do with posting my first campaign in detail where people much better at this game than I are possibly reading so I don't want to make myself look bad?

That's idiotic since it's still VERY early in the war, and I'm after all much more interested in having a fun game instead of trying to do everything perfect and winning the war in 1943.

Also, since my first "getting the hang of it" games were run for 3-7 turns and I have a lot of experience playing Pacwar, which with its relative simplicity and much "faster" pace, I have no idea how agressive/fast the AI is. I know AI is said to be not very good but I assume it acts somewhat historically in the first 6 months of the war?

Buffalos live up to my expectations of them (not good, unless used by Finns) and the Ryujo gets attacked multiple times from different airbases without getting even the paint scratched.

I'll need to step up deployment of the AVG to Rangoon, once I fix the runways...

Probably. I have *all* of the Malaya air groups flying out of Singapore, where I was consolidating all the aviation support, and most of the enemy shipping has been concentrated either to the north of the peninsula or east. I'd rather have them dropping torps, too, but with my lousy pilot accuracy....

More attacks by uber-Betty....gaah I HATE this plane in WitP and PacWar...in reality it was an overrated piece of junk easily shot down by any Allied fighter yet here I have unescorted G4M's getting through P-40's and actually inflicting a favorable loss/damage ratio....

My planes/subs do well against merchant ships, but I thought it was the US that had the damage control bonus, not Japan....IOW I have damaged several ships but have not sunk A SINGLE ONE, including light cruisers nailed with multiple 1000 lb bombs and merchants hit with both air and sub torpedoes. Hopefully next turn I'll be able to inflict further damage on the crippled enemy?

Sorry for the long break....got kinda busy with other not-so-fun Real Life Crap and this is a really time-intensive game if you are new (I think the learning curve actually goes on long enough to eventually rejoin itself and form a Learning Circle)

For the hell of it though I ran a campaign of the AI vs the AI just out of curiousity (I tried several diff campaigns) and that was..interesting (in my camp 43 the USN liked to sail CV TF's straight thru the middle of the Pacific and send Brit ships south through Malaya/Phillippines [X(]

Anyway, here's my orders for 12/14

Subs have arrived in Singapore and begin evac British Air Base forces to Chandpur, a smaller group heads back to Bataan (I'm a bit of a moron and forgot about all those ABF's in the Phillippines) while another group heads for the DEI.

Right now I'm worried about New Guinea. I need to get some assets to PM and Gili Gili and start building up some good airbases, particularly for fighters to cover the Aus-NG supply line and long-range bombers to start hitting Rabaul once the Japanese start building up the place. The closest units are Australia Command types but I don't have a lot of PP's as these are being used in the PI and DEI areas right now to try to pull out what I can.

PoW TF disbanded after arriving in Diamond Harbor.

CV Saratoga now within a day's sail or so of PH, with BB Colorado TF not far behind.

CL's and DD's collected at Soerbaja are split up into 2 roughly equal TF's with one to defend Soerbaja and the other going to Batavia. Soerbaja's PT boats are also collected into a TF.

Scanning the map reveals a group of fighters defending Delhi flying Westland Lysander liason planes....those pilots have some guts!!

CD guns at Georgetown ordered to bombard the enemy troops at the base.

I'm sure there's a ton of stuff I forgot about but that's what happens when you take about a month long break...hope to have the next turn up shortly so I can catch up.

Combat phase 12/14:

The bad news: The CD unit I told to bombard on Georgetown sat on its ass and did nothing and then the Japanese captured the place, wiping out the airgroups I was trying to get out there that couldn't transfer...note to self..in future try to disband whatever possible...

The Ryujo continues to be un-hittable.

On the good side, my torpedo bombers put 2 fish into the Mogami and CD guns scored some shipping hits.
