fatal error:999

I have fired up my WITP to prepare for the Admirals edition. I get fatal error:999 when I try to run it. I installed set up 1.5,
then 1.80 comprehensive then 1.0806 revamped. I have AVG free antivirus. I am running Vista.
There is a thread regarding this error, and following the instructions does not work for me.
I would like to volunteer as a AE beta tester to see if AE runs for me.

Paul,
As far as I know, that's an installation issue rather than a compatibility issue. Have you done a clean uninstall and reinstall while having your anti-virus turned off?

- Erik

Awww, I was hoping you would say "sure" Erik. I wanted to see how many machines "suddenly" stopped running WitP [:D]

I've experienced the same problem. I'm running Trend Micro and Spysweeper on a HP Vista machine. You have to turn your anti-virus OFF before starting WITP. I don't have the problem on my older HP machine running Windows XP (also with Trend Micro and Spysweeper). There's something to do with Vista and anti-virus software. I'm not sure if it's ALL Vista machines with ALL anit-virus or just certain combos.
Has any of the developers/testers encountered this problem with AE?

I have just been given a new Toshiba Laptop with Windows Vista for my anniversery. I installed Kapersky anti-virus. I then installed both WPO and WITP and have had no problems.
Don't know if this helps.

Did you install game to C:\Program FilesĀ folder? Cos that can cause trouble in Vista and one should install things that need to be patched/updated to some other folder. Vista tries to protect the content in that folder and that can cause patches not applying correctly etc.

No, I installed it to C:\Games\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific.
Maybe that is why I am not having any problems.

I disabled AVG for a freash install and it still happened. I then tested each step, and it appears to occur only if I install 1806 revamped.
Thoughts?

Not sure what your words (above) mean - but 999 means your installation is invalid. To reinstall, make sure you remove all the current files first. Then install from original media. After you've installed from original media, bring up the game - and let us know the result.

Yes, several antiviral programs will identify witprec.exe as a virus... most of them had fixed this glitch.
Either you need to "write an exception" in your antivirus program (some programs will allow it) or switch antiviral programs (or stop playing fully patched WITP).
EDIT: AVG originally had a problem with witprec.exe, but the AVG folks fixed it within 24 hours of players notifying them of the difficulty... and this was some months ago. i run AVG on my WITP machines without a problem now.

For some reason, samthesham has started duplicate threads for the same problem in this subforum... thus, he is getting duplicate advice from different people... i suggest we now ignore his
other "fatal error: 999" thread, and just post here. Maybe the other thread should be locked to prevent confusion?
EDIT: It would also help if he would comment:
1. Did he do a complete removal of the installation?
2. Did he do a new download of the patches? (these were suggested here and on the other thread.)

I would advise not downloading or installing any patches until AFTER he verifies that the base install from original media works.

According to post #8 - base install and upgrade to 1.804 worked... it is the 1.806 patch causing problems.
EDIT: PS - thanks for closing the second "version" of this thread. [8D]

Ok I figured it out.
There was an interim comprehensive patch, 1804, which I did not have. I was going from 1800 directly to 1806. the fact that I had AVG was a red herring that therw me off, then I went out of town for a couple days. Actually, this was mentioned in my original post.
Totally my fault, sorry. Just firing up the o' WIP prior to the Admirals edition. The Last rock-em sock-em game I had died of the synch bug after about 6 months of game play. Cant wait for AE.
Do I still get a copy of the AE beta? [:D]
