Effect of Coral Reef hexes on ship movement

What effect do coral reefs have on ship movement? I sent a bombardment TF down to bombard Cairns that contained 4 BBs. Also sent another bombardment TF containing CAs. The CA group moved in and bombarded, while the BB group hung out 4 hexes away trundling around (not going home, but not executing mission). Are the coral reef hexes coded so that BBs and bigger can't move through them?

I know US carriers and BBs can cross the reef to get into Cairns, so just trying to figure out why my BB bombardment TF couldn't get in there.

Or, is there some other factor affecting a bombardment TF I'm missing?

Thanks,

GLENN

Ships can not cross a reef hex. Chances are your CAs wer faster and had enough movement to go through the gap in the reef.

Try giving bombard orders to the TF in question again and change the speed setting (to full speed or mission speed). Sometimes a TF will hang out and not execute the mission so you have to prompt it again.

This happened one turn or multiple?

If one, any chance your BBs refueled the DDs that turn, burning ops points? I think I've seen cases where the algorithm for "how far do I want to stand off the previous turn to rush in, bombard at "dawn", and rush away" sets you up right but then a refuel occurs and it doesn't have enough op points to execute, so it stays in the hex.

If you have a save from the turn you expected them to go in, check the ops points.
