Lost Footage from BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP and it's Robert Conrad in the cockpit?

Thats one hell of a picture!! I think Coach Z is right...it is from BAA BAA BALCKSHEEP.[8D]

If it were BAA BAA you would see Southern California Scrub....

It is more specifically a F4U-1A. My guess is Vella LaVella c. late 1943

Best Fighter of the war…    Mattson Mat?? (i'm sure my spelling is off.  the metal mat on the airfield)..   and personally this place looks a hell of a lot better then my flippen cubical at work..

Frankly, it looks like a model diorama of a Corsair, with a picture background.

On closer exam, I 100% agree. The pilot's posture is all wrong. Look how clean the tires are. The plane is sitting on what appears to be a taxiway but it's engine isn't running. Also, if the pilot were say sitting on strip alert, there would be ground crew around to assist in start up.

The pilot in the cockpit looks like the pilot figure included in the Revell 1/32 Corsair kit.  If it is a kit, there have been some modifications to it.  The plane has the all around cowl flaps which were only common to -1s (birdcage) and the first hundred or so -1as.  The top portion of the cowling flaps were made static starting with the 100th or so -1a.  The Revell kit has the later version -1a cowl flaps.

It does look like a well made model though.

It’s a real photo, no doubt. It’s extremely hard to create something like this from diorama shot, believe me. I’ll go for F4U-1A, VMF-221, Guadalcanal, late ’43.

I've seen a lot of diorama photography.  It's on par with some of the better stuff I've seen.  It could be real, but the pilot does not appear to have any oxygen gear.  On the ground, there would be a mask visible somewhere around his neck.

I'm pretty sure the background is not Guadalcanal.  The trees around the airfield looked pretty forelorn even late in the war.  Those trees have not been damaged.  The late 43 time period is probably pretty close.  The US insignia look like they have the red outline painted out.

 Image source states this is a VMF-214 bird at Vella lavella, when I sourced this pick 6 months or so ago, I hadent paid all that much atention to it, Honestly it does sorta look like it could be a model, if it is I apoligise, I should of run this on Aprial 1st.[:)]
 
 It does sorta look like a Studabacker type truck in the background.

If this is really a diorama, creator possesses exceptional skills, direction and intensity of the light here are the best I’ve ever seen (we have to assume that author invested a lot of effort into making this job looks like ww2 photo, that’s a bit strange). But there is little chance for that however, after a few manipulations with this shot, I’m absolutely sure that this is a real photo. Usually autoleveler/contrast filters in graphic editors reveal all hidden glitches that always present on the photos with manually created illumination, in this case I do not see any. Btw, the pilot has his mask on actually, the shot is very blurry and it’s hardly visible, but it’s there. He can be from Massachusetts or Alabama, but he’s definitely not from the Revell’s kit ))

I’m not convinced that this is Vella Lavella, and I have never seen such tail markings on Blacksheep Corsairs, I may be wrong but there were only two units with such markings in Solomons area – VMF-221 and VF-17, in late 43 first were based at Fighter Strip 1 and the latter at Torokina. I still think this is Fighter strip 1 or 2 and this is not VMF-214 Corsair.

Wouldn't be the first picture I've seen that looked like a model but wasn't. There's a well-known picture of an R-class battlewagon that looks completely like a model. Has something to do with the sea around the ship.

I’m not convinced that this is Vella Lavella, and I have never seen such tail markings on Blacksheep Corsairs, I may be wrong but there were only two units with such markings in Solomons area – VMF-221 and VF-17, in late 43 first were based at Fighter Strip 1 and the latter at Torokina. I still think this is Fighter strip 1 or 2 and this is not VMF-214 Corsair.

I threw this pick in my (to be used some day) file a good long while ago, I was saving it for Memorial day, so I just joted down the relevent info in the Picture lable, It was a web source and realy all I can say for certain is the plane type, why I did not double check the Unit markings was that it was listed along with several other images from a source (private) covering VMF 214 birds, it is posable that this plane was from another unit originaly, or that the source was just wrong.

Question for Subchaser - thought Fighter 1 and 2 were a bit more open than that. And Munda was like Kansas. What do you think of maybe VMF 123 or VMF 124 at Segi Point?
